A friend took my DD for holiday for a week to spend time with her daughter

How can I am overcompensate is it to give a gift or to invite for dinner or invite her daughter for holiday?

Big thank you and a bunch of flowers when they get back. Arrange to take the girls on a few days out over the holidays.
You don’t need to take their child away on holiday, your situation may not make that affordable or practical anyway.
