Holiday Cancellation

Hi, we have a package holiday booked with Jet2 and we are meant to be flying in 19 days time, however, my son has just broken his leg and we are unsure if he can fly or not, and also admittedly whether we want to go on the holiday with our son being in a full leg cast. Stupidly I didn’t have any travel insurance prior to my son breaking his leg, but it appears we can still get insurance even with me declaring my sons broken leg. Now, my question is, will we still be able to claim all our holiday back on the insurance if:

  1. We decide we don’t want to go on the holiday anymore,
Or
  1. The doctor provides a letter (during my sons hospital referral) saying he’s not fit to fly

With us knowing and the insurance company knowing that he has a broken leg. I’ve tried reading all the T&C’s for Jet2 and the insurance company and cant find anything definitive. Thank you for any advice/information.

I know there are other potential options, i.e. speak to Jet2 and change dates – doing this we will lose 90% of costs or change names and sell holiday to somebody else.

an insurer won’t cover cancellation due to a broken leg your child already has.

This.

Your son already had a broken leg when you took out the insurance so you won't be covered for that. It's a pre-existing condition so will be excluded.

Your insurance will not cover you for "deciding we don't want to go on the holiday anymore".

This is why you must ALWAYS get your travel insurance at the same time as booking the holiday.

Have you checked you don't have insurance with your bank? Credit card etc?

But no you won't get your money back through insurance you've only just booked

Always take out cover when you book for this reason.
If he’s not fit to fly you’ll lose the amount paid; Jet2 or the insurance company won’t cover it.

Does your home insurance include travel insurance?
I am having to claim I do have travel insurance but weirdly they have wanted details of my home insurance also

MissAmbrosia · 05/07/2023 21:05

No - of course you can't claim now - as PPs said, you should take out insurance when you book. My credit card has travel insurance included though - worth checking?

No travel insurance covers you if you just decide you don't want to go
