Is this spending too much on holidays?

Sicladik · 03/07/2023 00:38

Do you think my daughter spends too much on holidays a year?

Before taxes etc, her and her partner make around 110k per year. They’re mid 20s just post uni, they rent, and one day will want to buy.

Currently she has told me that her total holiday spend is probably about £7k.

I think it’s none of my, or your, business. They sounds like they are doing just fine.

No - I’d spend more if I was them! 🤷🏻‍♀️

Ilikewinter · 03/07/2023 02:31

If they can afford it then no.

BreviloquentBastard · 03/07/2023 02:33

None of your business really is it?

But no, I don't think that's unreasonable. I spend more, I love going on new adventures and have lots of family abroad so travel is important to me.

If they're fed and housed and happy let them crack on while they're young and earning well enough to afford it.

BritWifeInUSA · 03/07/2023 05:06

I think that’s very low. I assume they don’t have children? I’d encourage them to travel as much as possible as they can now, while they are young and able to afford it.

For reference, we don’t have children either. We don’t rent and we live in the US so circumstances are slightly different, but also similar. I make $220k a year before tax (our taxes are much lower) and over the next two years we have $70k of travel booked, according to my spreadsheet. We will likely book some more. We tend to spend $50k a year on travel.

EggInANest · 03/07/2023 05:15

It’s a lot for young 20-somethings, but if they are not in debt what is there to worry about?

Do you know if they have any savings or are intending to save?

AmIbeingTreasonable · 03/07/2023 05:20

What business is it of yours?

Billybagpuss · 03/07/2023 05:24

Please stop judging them. I’m in my 50s dp knocking 80. Every single holiday I book I feel like they are judging me. They choose to squirrel away all their money and have significant savings but no interest in anything beyond their own 4 walls. I will be unlikely to save anywhere near what they have but I’ve had far more enjoyment out of my life.

ChocChipHandbag · 03/07/2023 05:29

Absolutely not. Travelling in your 20s with no kids and a committed partner is the absolute best thing in life. They probably both work pretty hard too if they have got grad jobs earning 55k.

MysteriesOfTheOrganism · 03/07/2023 05:41

Some people spend a lot of money on eating out, alcohol, drugs, clothes, concerts, cinema, theatre, high-end gadgets, cars, horses... you name it. We all value different leisure pursuits. I'm one of those who would rather spend the money on holidays, and if I had their kind of income I'd be spending that kind of money too. Assuming they're being savvy with money, saving towards a deposit and not running up credit card debt, then I don't see a problem.

I earn £150K and spend at least that 9n holidays. I drive an old car and shop at Lidl so shoot me.

Goldencup · 03/07/2023 05:45

Two teenagers here one at University, one sixth form.

HuntingoftheSnark · 03/07/2023 05:48

My daughter is 25. I know roughly what she earns but no idea what she spends on most things, as it's nothing to do with me. Most recent holiday excepted as we went together. I almost don't believe this is a genuine post!

seennothinglikeit · 03/07/2023 06:46

I spend more than that on holidays because it's my passion and hobby, I earn less than your DD. I budget accordingly.

My DM sometimes appears annoyed when I tell her about another holiday booked, I put it down to generational differences (born in war, lived off rations) or jealousy.
Do either of those apply to you?

Dotandtime · 03/07/2023 07:19

It wouldn't have been my choice as young people one day hoping to buy a home. DH and I barely went anywhere while we were saving. I have no regrets, personally I'm not that bothered about travelling, I guess we'd have done it differently if we were, but it's up to them.

I do sometimes wonder if people who "need" a lot of holidays have something else missing from their lives, I've always been poretty happy at home but we're all different.

Something will have to change if they are to buy a house, but I think in many areas that seems like such an impossible dream now, I don't blame them for doing something else with their money.

Either way, it's their choice.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 03/07/2023 07:31

If I earnt that, I'd spend at least that on holidays.

EvenmoreDetermined · 03/07/2023 07:40

I have a friend that age who does similar, every day of her annual leave is allocated to foreign travel with her partner (and sometimes their families), good for them I say, they are having the time of their lives and I love hearing about it all afterwards.

Moveoverdarlin · 03/07/2023 07:42

Sounds about right, that’s about 2 nice holidays or 1 lovely holiday and a few city breaks.

These are literally the best years of their lives. Spend the money. Go on fabulous holidays. This is it, just do it.

bibbityboppityboo · 03/07/2023 07:45

We earn more and spend more on holidays 🤷🏻‍♀️

Don't think that sounds like too much at all! I do think it sounds like none of your business though.

Why do you ask?

FarTooHotForMe · 03/07/2023 07:53

It sounds fine, obviously when they decide they want to buy and need to save for a deposit I imagine they’ll probably cut down.
My DS earns 29k plus a 5k bonus and spends 4k on holidays.
My DH and I drawdown a 70k pension and spent 40k, now that’s definitely too much!

RosesAndHellebores · 03/07/2023 07:55

No. They are doing well with their earnings though. DS and DIL are on about £80k between them at 28.

ChocChipHandbag · 03/07/2023 07:59

I bet one of the holidays is skiing!

FarTooHotForMe · 03/07/2023 08:00

That’s what I thought, they are earning well above average salaries so it’s nice they are able to enjoy their money.
