Is this spending too much on holidays?

Do you think my daughter spends too much on holidays a year?

Before taxes etc, her and her partner make around 110k per year. They’re mid 20s just post uni, they rent, and one day will want to buy.

Currently she has told me that her total holiday spend is probably about £7k.

I would ensure i'd spoken to her about pension savings and ensuring that there is money for the future, but beyond that I think it's fine.

DH and I spent at least that on similar combined salaries before DC came along in our 30s. I wish we'd spent more! We earn more now and have a higher annual holiday budget but we're also 4 people and stick to school holidays so don't get as much for it.

Looks like you're one of those interfering in-laws op. Will you comment on the cost of a possible future baby's pram etc? You'll soon find yourself isolated.

And yes- I know op is her mother but I'm sure her daughters partner isn't impressed.

I think they should be spending at least £30K a year on holidays.

Live and let live - it’s none of your business. I’d be happy they’re able to enjoy life - they shouldn’t have any money worries on that salary.

It sounds fine to me. But surely on that kind of income they could buy a 1 bed flat at least?

They probably don't want that.mist first time buyers don't seem content with something that meets their needs
They all seem to want a 2 bed terraced house or 3 bed semi...

7k for a year? For both or each? Doesn’t seen a lot to me

icanflytoday · 03/07/2023 21:34

I spent more than that on holidays at that age. In your 20s is the right time to travel and enjoy holidays! I resigned from my job at 28 and went around the world for a year. I now own a house and have 2 children, less opportunities for travel now!

bellac11 · 03/07/2023 21:37

Its 7% of their gross income, less in fact

We spend more of a percentage than that although our income is a lot lower!!

VimFuego101 · 03/07/2023 21:42

It's about the same percentage of income as we spend - I don't think it's excessive.

Vanillalime · 03/07/2023 22:32

To be fair to the OP, we have no idea about her opinion of her daughters spend. For all we know the OP could be encouraging her daughter to spend more whilst she isn’t tied down with a mortgage or kids.

To answer your question, I personally don’t think £7k is too much to spend on holidays on a combined income of £110k. I would be squeezing in another break or 2!! 😂

Maddy70 · 03/07/2023 22:35

It's absolutely nothing to do with you. Your daughter is an adult

I think that’s very low. I assume they don’t have children? I’d encourage them to travel as much as possible as they can now, while they are young and able to afford it.

For reference, we don’t have children either. We don’t rent and we live in the US so circumstances are slightly different, but also similar. I make $220k a year before tax (our taxes are much lower) and over the next two years we have $70k of travel booked, according to my spreadsheet. We will likely book some more. We tend to spend $50k a year on travel.

So you spend about 10% of your earnings on travel? Is 220k pre or post tax? If it's pre tax then you spend more than 10% on travel. That's a hell of a lot of your income

Nofreshstarthere22 · 03/07/2023 22:40

Why????

MaryShelley1818 · 04/07/2023 10:27

We earn less and spend more on holidays! It's our one indulgence.

Doteycat · 04/07/2023 12:35

We have a very active social life AND we love to travel. We try have 5 or 6 trips a year of various types, weekends away, concerts abroad, chill week by the pool, whatever we fancy really. We always loved our hols but Covid and menopause for me really made us think, you only get once around so do the thing, book the holiday, buy the tickets.
I actively encourage my dds to go on holidays and travel and have young carefree fun while they can. 7k is not a lot if you are earning with 2 wages coming in. Some people spend it on handbags or bikes.
Mind your own business basically.
