Hi

2A 2DC (10 and 7) looking to visit Spain for a week next early April.

Ideally Valencia / Barcelona kind of area but open to Seville and the south.

Where would you go?! Any specific recommendations? Budget not huge - under £5k ideally. And flights from Edinburgh, Aberdeen or Inverness...

April? Seville will be absolutely Megabucks if it's Easter week due to it being semana santa, otherwise I'd say go to Seville as it's probably the best time, weather wise, to visit!

Barcelona is easy to get to, lots for all the family to do, but not cheap and you need to watch re pickpockets etc.

Valencia is lovely, has a fabulous beach, smaller and hence fewer activities on offer, but cheaper than BCN. I got a flight back from Valencia to Stansted for £16 once but I doubt that's the regular fare!

Also consider málaga; easy to get to, lots to see and do, easy day trips from there, wide choice of accom. But Easter week will likely be pricey there too.

Weather can be iffy in Spring, even in the south, so don't expect to be sun and shorts!

Totally on board with the weather. We lived in Spain many (very many!) years ago ore-kids but in a very rural area near Valencia. And have never been back so feel we don't know where to go.

Budget can be more flexible if needed or we can do 5 days rather than a full week.

As PP says, Seville will be probably rammed in April, the two biggest festivals of the year happen at Easter and two weeks afterwards. It is a great city to visit though!

Unless seeing some of the spectacle of Holy Week is part of your reason for wanting to go, it might be better to wait until after the Easter weekend to go as they do take it very seriously in Spain.

Valencia is a lovely city and is great for families! I much prefer it to Barcelona now. It’s got good musuems, a great aquarium and zoo, fantastic food, lovely beaches, and is usually much quieter and cheaper!

I think your budget should be fine, although it depends on what sort of accomodation you’d like of course.

You’ll definitely get more for your money in Valencia rather than Barcelona though.

We were shocked when we went to Barcelona recently just how expensive it now felt.

Why not go to the canaries where the weather is nicer?

fireflyloo · 01/07/2023 21:54

Weather is too hit and miss for Spain at Easter. My in laws lived there and we often visited with dc during Easter (Alicante area) and out of the 7 years we never got in the pool (dc dipped their feet!) and we had a storm one year. This year was hot though! We went to canaries last year and the year before and it was beautiful.

CubDeCap · 01/07/2023 22:03

Honestly not bothered about the weather. April will be fine - we live in rural Scotland... We definitely want mainland Spain. Not really keen on the canaries

What do you want to see/do?

Spain is huge and so many places worth visiting.

You could fly to Malaga and spend some time in Malaga city for the Semana Santa parades, some time rurally, and also visit Granada, Ronda, Mijas, all sorts of places.

El Caminito del Rey is amazing (as long as your 7YO will be 8 by then)
