Luxury country hotel recommendations

I’m planning to treat my adult children and their partners to a short UK holiday next year. Originally I was thinking of a really nice self catering cottage with four bedrooms, all en-suite, and a pool or hot tub and found details of loads of places in N Wales and Shropshire.

Once I starting thinking about domestic details, I began to go off the idea of self catering as I want a complete break without even thinking of what to eat, where to eat, food shopping etc. I even considered using a private chef but that would still leave lunches and breakfasts to faff with!

So, now I’m looking at hotels, not large chains, more country manor style with a swimming pool and maybe a lounge area for us to chat in the evening, serving breakfast, lunch and evening meals so we have choices of when to eat based on our dat time activities.

I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations I could look at? We need to be within an hour or so drive from Manchester and Birmingham with some nice places nearby to explore. I’m not too bothered about price, I’ve got some money saved in my retirement fund which I’d like to enjoy with my family.

Thanks in advance.

Dormy House in Broadway or The Fish Hotel

Lots to look at!

I have one child living in Birmingham and one in E Lancs so am trying to focus on places they could get to within an hour or so after work. Hence the Lake District being a bit far for my son and The Cotswolds a bit far for my daughter!

I might extend my search into the Peak District.

The last drop village in Bromley Cross on the outskirts of Bolton - spa, restaurants, and craft shops.

The tawny and the fish are both very nice. As is dormy house. we usually go to the fish at least once a year.

i really liked the gilpin but haven’t been for quite a while.

If a spa hotel would fit the bill perhaps Moddershall Oaks? it’s in staffs so between b’ham and lancs. It’s a gorgeous spa, but also really lovely rooms and food.

Cotswolds isn’t too far from Birmingham. I work in Birmingham and live in the North Cotswolds. It’s about an hour’s drive. Or get the train to Stratford-upon-Avon and then it’s less than half an hour’s drive to places like Moreton-in-Marsh, Chipping Campden and Broadway.

Hotel recommendations: Cotswold House (Chipping Campden), Dormy House, Lygon Arms, Ettington Park.

Sorry, just realised you possibly want one location between Birmingham and Manchester not a location that works from either of those places! Hoar Cross Hall then 100%. Pretty much in the middle of the two.

Langar Hall, Notts. Amazing food and beautiful surroundings.

We have just been to the Celtic Manor hotel which is lovely, big though.

Unfortunately the Cotswolds are a bit too far for those living in Manchester to travel, especially in the Friday tea time rush hour on the M6! A shame really as I used to enjoy visiting there when I lived in Solihull.
