Lake maggiore

We are staying in Switzerland at the end of July and hoping to do an overnight trip/stay at lake maggiore.
can anyone recommend best places to stay (hopefully not too expensive) and things to do. We would probably arrive in the morning and leave the following afternoon.

Locarno/Muralto - The Piccolo Hotel

Ascona is also lovely - Charme Hotel al Torchio is great value

I love Stresa and the Hotel La Palma - probably not that cheap in July though. Boat trips to the Borromean Islands.
