Mexico or Barbados in August

We have the potential to go to either Mexico or Barbados next August (or July). Which would you choose and why?

When we went to Barbados in August it was around 32 C and humid with just a few showers which were gratefully received to cool things a little. The sea is really warm and it was gorgeous on the beach. Humidity wasn’t so bad on the East coast because of the wind coming off the Atlantic. The whole island seemed to be buzzing with a great party atmosphere because there were a couple of festivals/parades/carnivals taking place around then. I’ve never been to Mexico in August, but DSis had a flight delayed when she went due to hurricanes. The chance of hurricanes in Barbados is very small.

Thanks that's really helpful. Hurricanes are our main worry but good to know they aren't as likely in Barbados. Was food / drink super expensive?

If we go to Barbados it would be to St Philip on the south east coast

Barbados stands out as probably one of the most expensive places we have ever travelled to, but with a few tweaks we were able to enjoy the island without completely blowing our budget. We used public transport and ate at a lot of street food markets.

How easy is it to buy things like breakfast and lunch stuff at a supermarket in Barbados?

@afrikat I can’t answer that as we had breakfast included and grabbed cheap street eats for lunch.

We haven't been for 20 years but always stayed in self catering & shopped at the supermarkets. There were also a lot of "mini markets" - convenience stores. A friend went recently & stayed in an Airbnb & said it was really expensive to eat out. She only ate out once.

Mexico, but travelling around. Lots of history and culture and bigger. Chichen Itza, cenotes, Aztecs and Mayan history, distinct food culture. To top it off great beaches and fun. I’m not going that far for beaches and a pool so want depth of experience. To be honest neither would appeal to me in Aug because of the weather, but Mexico wins for me. What appeals to you is important though, that’s just my view.

Neither it is hurricane season. I love both destinations but prefer Barbados however it is very expensive even in supermarkets. It is a winter destination to enjoy the best weather but hotel prices and flights are cheaper in the summer.

I would absolutely choose Barbados, its an amazing destination. The food, the beaches, the luxury Barbados villa rentals, the culture. We love everything about the island and cant wait to go back again. one of our favorite places
