Worried about holidaying to America

DH and I would love to do New York but the safety of America around their laws etc puts me off. I went nearly ten years ago and this wasn’t a consideration then but I was still a teen and travelling with my parents, and a lot can change in a decadd

Would it/has it put anyone else off?

Not something I’ve ever given a second thought to. 🤷🏻‍♀️

AliceOlive · 25/06/2023 15:33

I wouldn’t go to New York right now or any of the other major cities. I live in driving distance if NYC and am skeptical myself. I’d go for the day, but not so keen on planning a huge trip even though I love it.

Other places, fine. But I’m reading about too much random crime there.

It’s not so much the laws but the lack of enforcement.

Throwawayme · 25/06/2023 15:33

Nah. I'd not move there but as a holiday I'd not give it a thought.

whoruntheworldgirls · 25/06/2023 15:33

Nope I'm off to California in summer and can't wait

AliceOlive · 25/06/2023 15:34

Where in California though? LA or San Fran?

Innocents4321 · 25/06/2023 15:34

It’s unlikely you will get shot. Take a note of which areas not to go to, don’t take risks and you should be OK.

Outofthemoonlight · 25/06/2023 15:34

What do you mean by 'the safety of America around their laws etc' - what exactly are you worried about?

Millions of people visit NYC and if things go wrong it's rarely due to 'their laws'.

AliceOlive · 25/06/2023 15:35

On the other hand, I was in NYC during the random machete attacks. I was a few blocks away and only knew because I read it online.

JamSandle · 25/06/2023 15:35

I'm more off put now by America than I was but the likelihood is you'll be fine.

I've heard there's a lot of random subway attacks now so would avoid that if I could.

Fandabedodgy · 25/06/2023 15:37

I'm not sure what safety of America around their laws means but I've enjoyed several visits to the US including 2 in the last 12 months with no issues.

prayforthecottransfer · 25/06/2023 15:38

Nope. I go to America twice a year with my children and I feel perfectly safe.

Rosalisa · 25/06/2023 15:39

I live in America now sadly, but I wouldn't have come if I wasn't firmly in menopause.

chipsandpeas · 25/06/2023 15:39

ive been to new york last month and would go back again like a shot, its a big city shit happens but your unlikely to encounter it as a tourist

I wouldnt give it a 2nd thought

incognitopurple · 25/06/2023 15:41

Thanks everyone. I’ve probably watched too much television!

We went to New York last summer and it felt like any other big city in terms of safety. The cost of food there is what puts me off going back!

ThatOnePlease · 25/06/2023 15:41

You sound anxious and your fear is not reasonable. However, if you are going to feel afraid on holiday, that's not much of a break, is it? You shouldn't be flinching during every subway ride that you may be attacked, or afraid someone will mug you at gunpoint.

NYC is amazing, a fantastic place to visit.

But it's your hols. Go where you will feel happy and confident.

throwawayaway1 · 25/06/2023 15:42

I'm sorry, but I think this is mad. Statistically, you're in greater danger of being killed or injured in a car accident in you daily life than you are of being the victim of a crime while visiting New York.

How do you mean?

I suspect this is a reference to abortion being outlawed in many places in the USA.

Though not in NY.

Qilin · 25/06/2023 15:44

We are going to Florida in the summer and went to New York last year. Have been going to the US on and off for almost 20 years.
I've never felt any less safe than when in any other country and big city tbh.

21y Dd is currently spending the summer working in Florida and moving it. Like everywhere she follows sensible safety advice, especially if our in the evenings and/or alone. I'm not overly concerned, but any more so than if she was some other country tbh.

Aquamarine1029 · 25/06/2023 15:47

Of all the gorgeous places to go to in America, why you'd go to NYC is beyond me.

Berlinlover · 25/06/2023 15:50

I was in Chicago in March, it was an absolute shithole and I have vowed never to set foot in America again. Drug addicts everywhere, I was almost mugged at 2 in the afternoon, several shootings the week we were there, a 26 year old woman stabbed to death two blocks from our city centre hotel. The St Patrick’s Day parade was fun though!

bibbityboppityboo · 25/06/2023 15:52

I've been to the USA five times last year and twice this year with a few more trips planned - to NYC and other places. Absolute love it and it feels safe to me tbh.
