Burgundy passport - anyone still using one?

Has anyone recently travelled on a burgundy passport rather than a new, blue one?

We fly to Austria in August and both me and DS have new, blue passports.

DH still has a burgundy one - issued in 2016, so, less than 10 years ago and doesn't expire until 2026, so way more than 6 months after our return and has at least 2 blank pages. This is fine, I take it?

Suddenly came to me that he doesn't have a new one, but his burgundy one is still well in date, so my understanding is that it's valid?

Of course it's still valid. We flew yesterday and only ds has a blue one, the other 3 have burgundy ones. Mine and dh's are valid until 2029. Dd's needs renewing next year

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 25/06/2023 08:29

Yes, I only got it in 2019!

I renewed mine about a year earlier than necessary, just so I could have a red one for as long as possible, plus it says European Union on the front. Valid til 2029, travelled with it last week.

Same

Jesus wept 🤦🏻‍♀️

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 25/06/2023 08:37

It’s valid of course BUT it expires for EU travel purposes exactly 10 years from the date of issue.

Your passport may say it expires 10 years and a few months after the date of issue, if you renewed it early last time. The full printed expiry is fine for most other countries.

Cant believe this is a real question.

Mine is black by the way.

But whatever the colour, I grieve when having to queue up at the 'non EU' gates.

TheCyclingGorilla · 25/06/2023 08:44

There was a bloke in the local news who was complaining his brand new passport still had the Queen on it, not King Charles. What a thing to be upset by 😆. (Sorry, off topic)

Anyone with a burgundy passport gets sent for re-education in a non E.U. country.

Thereoughttobeclowns · 25/06/2023 08:47

Of course it’s fine. I’m the only one in our household that has a new blue one.

SpringIntoChaos · 25/06/2023 09:29

Where are people getting 'black' passports from? The newly issued UK passports are dark blue!!

NCTDN · 25/06/2023 09:31

@PumpkinPie2016 off the topic but where in Austria are you going? We're there in August too.

Polis · 25/06/2023 13:32

Agree though - the new ones aren't very nice!

I was in an immigration queue recently and a couple of teens in front of me were moaning that their mum’s blue passport looked “so much cooler” than their burgandy ones.

You can’t please everybody.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 25/06/2023 13:36

I got mine in the switchover period, so it's burgundy but doesn't say European Union.

Going away this time will be the first time I've used it!

Yes absolutely fine, I'm on holiday right now having travelled on one issued just before the new ones came in.

Same here

99victoria · 25/06/2023 17:00

Maybe missing the point a bit but the new passports are black aren't they, not blue? Or am I colour-blind?

Oakbeam · 25/06/2023 17:02

They are blue. Very, very, very, dark blue. In fact, almost black.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 25/06/2023 17:13

My passport issued 2019 is burgundy .
DH's was issued either a year before or after mine and was black .
Don't know why the two different colours .
DH lost his passport while on holiday earlier this year and had a temporary one to travel home which was light blue . Haven't seen his new one - assume navy, then ?

tinytemper66 · 25/06/2023 18:56

Yes. Mine is still valid until 2027.

LancreWowhawk · 25/06/2023 22:20

I'll travel on my burgundy EU one for the last time in August. It will be invalid by the time we go away again in the spring, so I'm going to renew as soon as we get back as I want to give it plenty of time.

I'm very sad about it.

You can just about tell they are blue if you put them next to something that is actually black, and in a good light.

It’s a metaphor for something…
