Planning to go to Tuscany in april with ds aged 18m and another family with child of the same age.Have looked through James villas and another company called Tuscany now.Have you used either of these companies? And if so which is the better one?And is it worth visiting Naples? Our friends are keen but we have read pretty bad things about it.

Can't comment on either company. We always go by booking through 'owners direct' website or through The Sunday Times ads columns (always been good). Re Naples; it's a v interesting but it is a chaotic and v slightly unsafe (handbag snatching etc) city. Worth a v quick visit but far better is to get the short ferry from the harbour and go and spend the day on beautiful Capri.

We also found Tuscan villa on internet via owners so can't comemnt on companies. Naples has a real faded grandeur to it but the food is wonderful Capri is nice but a bit tourist hell.

We are going to to two places in Tuscany this summer - use this site - they are far more reasonable than Tuscany Now!

Bowhills.co.uk.

Google 'agroturismo tuscany'- loads of great places to stay. I have heard Naples is v unsafe, I have passed through and it just seemed like a normal busy city, as in nothing too exciting. Although it is near Pompeii which is great. There is so much to do in Tuscany though. Oh I am jealous!

Sunshinemummy · 26/02/2008 15:59

Pompeii is great but huge - take lots of water to drink. You do need to be careful in Naples. I got my bag slashed open while there as we were behaving like silly tourists dithering. Luckily bag was lined so the guy didn't get anything.

would do Naples if going to Tuscany as they are on the opposite sides of the country. Lots of lovely places to see in tuscany instead. OR you could stay somewhere like Positano and go for day trips to naples.
also might want to try and look for places in La Marche - (near tuscany and umbria and same countryside but much much cheaper)

witchandchips · 26/02/2008 16:01

sorry meant wouldn't do naples !

If you are going to Tuscany, I would suggest that Naples is not ideal - it is a long way to go with dcs.

There is so much to do in Tuscany anyway - Siena, Florence, Lucca, the marble caves, or just sitting in nice restaurants drinking red wine, walking along the sea front or in the hills.

Why not do Naples another time and base yourself further south. Also, Naples is not exactly an ideal place for an 18 month old, as it is busy and noisy.

Where are you going in Tuscany?

Naples has great food, but there are better citis to go to. If you're in Tuscany, try and go to Siena.
