Strongest OTC painkiller in Spain?

PawsAndReflection · 23/06/2023 17:12

My sister is currently in Spain and has forgotten her codeine prescription, she tried the pharmacy to get help and they were very unhelpful.

Does anyone know the strongest painkiller she can get over the counter in the interim? She's going to try another place tomorrow and is really in pain.

Thanks!

I think she’ll need a prescription for them in spain. Can she not see a Dr? If she has a ehic or GHIC card it shouldn’t cost to see one.

You need prescription. They won’t hand any medicines without it not even paracetamol

@EasterIssland you can buy paracetamol without a prescription in Spain. I’m there right now and bought some last night?

Antidol paracetamol is surprisingly effective (according to DD who gets people to stock up on it whenever they go) you absolutely can get it otc

Does she have a box with a pharmacy sticker on it with her name and address?

You can buy paracetamol and ibuprofen in Spain at the pharmacy

In the last few years they have really cut down on the medications you can buy over the counter, or the over the counter doses.

She would probably be better seeing a doctor and requesting an emergency prescription.

Also in my experience, the pharmacy staff in large cities and in tourist areas on the coasts speak excellent English. Go to a pharmacy, ask.

I thought the GHIC card entitled you to what the locals get. So if the locals pay to see the GP then you will too. I think it's likely that they do.

GulesMeansRed · 24/06/2023 11:58

You are spot on, @Janek . GHIC gives you local entitlement. If locals pay, you do too.

I don’t think you do pay for the appointment but will have to pay for the prescription in spain.

GulesMeansRed · 24/06/2023 14:43

The other thing to remember is that in Spain there is standard pricing on medicines which you buy over the counter or on prescription, so it really doesn't matter what chemist you go to.

Not anymore. You can buy the same strength stuff as over here. They've cracked down on pharmacies selling medicines illegally.

If she needs codeine then she will have to get a prescription.
