Most beautiful places in Britain

AmilyChestnut · 22/06/2023 10:56

If you had a motorhome and 9 days holiday, and could explore anywhere in Britain, where would you go?

Looking for recommendations of where to explore, and where is a must see in our beautiful country!

North Coast 500

IggyAce · 22/06/2023 11:09

NC500 would be on my list. Also Northumberland is stunning so I’d happily tour there too.

gldd · 22/06/2023 11:16

Sorry to be a complete grump, but... the area of the NC500 was one of the most beautiful places in Britain. Until it was ruined by incessant numbers of motorhomes, sports cars, and motorbikes :-(

EllaPaella · 22/06/2023 11:24

West coast Scotland and North Devon and all of Cornwall are my favourites.
I live in Northumberland and think it's beautiful here too.

ICanMakeDecisionsWithoutMyTelevision · 22/06/2023 11:26

yorkshire dales

AlwaysTheGoodGirl · 22/06/2023 11:29

Just beaten to it with the Yorkshire Dales recommendation. Peace, quiet, beautiful scenery, my favourite calm place.

kelsaycobbles · 22/06/2023 11:31

Do you want sea, moors, dales, architecture, history, rivers, remote, quaint, culture,

What do you do ?

Almahart · 22/06/2023 11:37

Northumberland

Completely agree. Motorhomes (and indeed cars generally) are a blot on some of the most beautiful landscapes and historic towns. We should at least be charging people properly for the damage they do when visiting, if we can't impose limits/bans.

ohtowinthelottery · 22/06/2023 11:45

Outer Hebrides

gogomoto · 22/06/2023 11:47

Shetland. But with ferries I like the highlands of Scotland and Pembrokeshire. Cornwall and Devon are too busy in summer

cushcosh · 22/06/2023 11:50

I just went to Snowdonia. It was glorious. Hills, mountains, coastline, and not a cloud in the sky all week.

redfacebigdisgrace · 22/06/2023 11:52

NC500 can’t cope with the amount of traffic. It’s shocking. Makes me sad.

LadyTemperance · 22/06/2023 11:52

North Wales and Anglesey. In particular Newborough beach, national trust woodland and beach with a lighthouse to walk out to.

redfacebigdisgrace · 22/06/2023 11:53

Outer Hebrides are beautiful.

ICanMakeDecisionsWithoutMyTelevision · 22/06/2023 11:57

my favourite place in the whole world is Malham Tarn, on a summer's day, so quiet, the sound of the sheep, fresh air, relaxing and beautiful

gldd · 22/06/2023 12:05

I know parts of Sutherland very well and am glad I spent a lot of time there before the circus of the 'NC500'. I'm sure the marketing graduates at Visit Scotland and some business owners up there are pleased, but for many it has been ruined

South Wales. I love in Cornwall , have done for 40 years so I've seen it all , so I guess I take it for granted, otherwise I'd possibly say Cornwall.

If the NC500 appeals to you, but the volume of traffic puts you off, you could consider the SC300. It takes you along the coasts of Dumfries and Galloway and Ayrshire, which are absolutely stunning. Nowhere near as busy either.

Outer Hebrides

Yes the best beaches in the world

BarbaraofSeville · 22/06/2023 12:37

Where are you starting from and when are you going?

I wouldn't try the south west or the Lake District (or the NC500!) in the summer as it will be already very crowded. I also wouldn't plan to go to North Wales or the Scottish Borders if you're in Kent as you'll be passing many beautiful places on the way.

Yorkshire would be great. Yorkshire Dales, Pennines and NY Moors for hills and scenery. You could spend a day in York, go to the coast, visit places like the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, the choice is endless.

Iloveanicegarden · 22/06/2023 12:39

Why would anyone post on here and then in x number of years it's all ruined by hundreds of tourists. Many of the places mentioned are on my list and I've been to many, but it could easily turn into a trek such as you see in the queue waiting to climb Everest

ohtowinthelottery · 22/06/2023 12:39

@Unexpectedlysinglemum They certainly are beautiful. We spent a week in 2019 travelling from Barra and Vatersay up to Harris and Lewis. A week isn't long enough!

The number of vehicles is limited to an extent by the number of ferry crossings. After we left the islands we drove up to Durness. I couldn't believe how many motorhomes, caravans, motor bikes and sports cars there were in such a remote spot! We didn't do the NC500 route though and having seen the bit we did in 2019 I don't think I'd want to!
