Any Greek Island not spoilt by wasps or mozzies?

Hello Marvellous Mumsnetters!

Just wanted to pick your 'expert Greek Island brain' if I may. Wanting to book a jolly for our Summer holiday. Yep! Bit late I know. We were set on Kephalonia but then advised that wasps can be a serious nuisance. (actually stinging without provocation) We visited Northern Corfu a couple of years and the ferocious mozzies drove us mad. Never had such a problem with daytime mozzies that weren't repelled by avon so soft or deet before! They were brutal.

So although I know everywhere will have a certain amount of biting stinging bugs and beasties, especially in the summer, has anyone visited any of the islands and it's been bearable and wouldn't put you off retuning? Looking for one of the non-party islands.

Huge thanks in advance for any advice or info. It would be so helpful to hear about any of your experiences, cheers!

What time of year were you thinking of and what month were you in Corfu? We were in Kefalonia end of June/early July last year and didn't have a wasp or mozzie problem, maybe it varies.

lolly72 · 21/06/2023 08:53

Sorry! That's Kefalonia. Didn't know how to edit.

Time of year makes a big difference for wasps. If you want to avoid mozzies then go somewhere dry, so one of the cyclades or dodecanese. What about Astypalaia?

Bubbles254 · 21/06/2023 08:54

I have never had a problem on the west coast of Crete, maybe the sea breeze keeps them away.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 21/06/2023 08:55

Naxos and Paros (and Santorini) were fine in July. Got eaten alive in Athens.

lolly72 · 21/06/2023 08:56

Ooo that's interesting. And good to hear. We were in Corfu in October half term, but in the North where there's more lakes so maybe that's a thing. We are looking at the beginning of the summer holiday, so late July, early August but quite flexible. Did you love Kefalonia?

We went to Chania in Crete last year and didn't have an issue with either.

Oh wow! Thanks for all your super swift replies, I have to go out now but will check back later on all your wonderful advice. Thank you so much xx

Kefalonia is beautiful, one of my favourite places ever.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 21/06/2023 09:00

Just got back from Kos last week. No wasps and I only got bitten once by something else. That's a record for me as I'm normally eaten alive.

BridportSpectacular · 21/06/2023 11:32

Kefalonia was beautiful - so green - we went in October - bit of mozzie action when sitting outside villa at dusk - but not in restaurants etc. No wasps that I remember - and I hate wasps. Loved the Island. It was my first visit to Greece so now idea how it compares with other places, but I'd go back in a heartbeat and rarely go back anywhere (etc Mallorca which I also love).

redfacebigdisgrace · 21/06/2023 17:28

Cyclades are windy but the good news is very few mosquitoes!

Cookerhood · 21/06/2023 17:33

We had wasps in Kefalonia in October. I'd forgot though, so it can't have been that bad. One did sting me.

Thosesummernights · 21/06/2023 17:42

I feel your pain. We had wasps in corfu a few years ago and my poor son was stung twice on each cheek at the same time. They were everywhere and couldn’t eat outside. That was July time.

If you like the Ionians then Paxos is wonderful. Easy island to drive around, wonderful beaches and great food. It’s perfect - and lack of fruit trees (unlike Corfu) means hardly any wasps.

We’ve booked Kefalona for next summer and now I’m worried!

99victoria · 21/06/2023 18:30

We've been going to Kefalonia for about 10 years. Some years there are wasps, some years there aren't.
It's never put us off returning

Riapia · 21/06/2023 19:10

Cyclades. There’s nowhere for the little fuckers to hide.
Santorini is awesome. Unfortunately it’s infested by cruise ship passengers.
If you can get to know when the season for cruise ships is avoid then.

Lcb123 · 21/06/2023 19:14

We’ve just been to Crete (agios Nickolas), no bites or bugs!

trrk · 21/06/2023 19:27

Never seen either in the Cyclades and I’ve been to around 10 of them at different times of the summer. Wind can be a problem though but it probably helps keep the wasps and mosquitoes away. Just back from Kefalonia and we got a few bites and saw a few wasps but neither were a major problem in June. Wasn’t out at dusk though since we had a baby to put to bed.

Frenchfancy · 21/06/2023 19:32

We were in Crete last year and had no problems

Wanderlust75 · 21/06/2023 20:03

Went to Kefalonia second weeknof August, I do remember some wasps in one of the beaches while having a picnic. I think my oldest daughter got bitten a bit by mosquitoes too but nothing too bad and we still had a great time.

We use mosquitoes bands now plus repellent. No for DH as mosquitoes don’t like him.

Kefalonia is beautiful; just go prepare. Having air conditioner also help as DD mainly gets bitten while sleeping
