Will I regret not doing it as a package holiday?

Booking a week in Lanzarote, can get the hotel I want through Jet2 half board with a double room for £2400 but if I book flights seperately and the hotel directly I book all inclusive in a two bedroom suite for £2600 so it seems a no brainer. Just to upgrade to all inc through Jet2 takes it up to £3k and they don't have the 2 bedroom suites available which guarantees more sleep with two small kids.

I'm aware I'll have to sort out private transfers.. ok with that! Will I regret not going package? Is there anything else I'm not thinking of?!

Sounds fine.

Check the providers of both are ABTA and ATOL and take out insurance as soon as you buy.

Lanzarote is pretty small and dead easy to get around so transfer shouldn't be a problem. If you're anywhere in the main resorts you can even pick up a taxi from the airport for not very much.

doingitalllagain · 14/06/2023 12:20

Hotel booking is through H10 and flights through Jet2, just seen transfer is short so you're right taxi will be fine! Going to go for it, I think.

We do this all the time - cant remember last time we booked a package. If you contact hotel directly they can probably arrange a transfer. Taxi likely to be cheaper but may be a queue. Make sure you have travel insurance in place.

mycoffeecup · 14/06/2023 12:26

if your flight is cancelled, you'll still have to pay for the rooms and vice versa.......

ToWonderWhyIBother · 14/06/2023 12:41

Have you thought about upgrading to all inclusive when you actually get to the hotel, its usually cheaper to do once you are there aswell.

You can sometimes do it daily so if you want to pick a couple of days to stay by the pool you can do it for those days and take full advantage of the all inclusvie

donquixotedelamancha · 14/06/2023 12:51

I always book like this. It's often around double the price for a package.

As long as you have good insurance in place as soon as you book it's fine.

Exactly.
We lost a lot of money in 2020 because of this; flights, hotels, car hire & parking, transfers, airport hotels. We now only book when we're covered by the package holiday rules (not necessarily package holidays).

Have you checked the luggage allowance? Holiday includes luggage, but I think flight only may not.
Also, have you checked other operators for the same hotel, e.g. EasyJet, BA, Tui etc.

If your flight is cancelled, and you can't get another, insurance won't pay out for your wasted hotel rooms

If your hotel goes bust and you can't find another, insurance won't pay out for your wasted flights

ginslinger · 14/06/2023 13:04

It might be cheaper to book direct with the hotel - you will probably get the better suite and possibly upgraded if there is anything to upgrade to

Yes it will.

I've not ever heard of Jet2 cancelling flights, I think it's rare? Would book flights only with Jet2 then hotel directly

I always compare package v self booked but my experience has been that 99% of the time package is cheaper. Possibly because I am fussy about regional airport and flight time.
On the odd occasion it's the other way round I have booked separately. Even with a package I always book a private transfer. Was in Playa Blanca this year with Jet2 but paid £50 for a taxi.

I recommend a Playa Blanca FB group for info. Playa Blanca, Lanzarote (note the wording).

doingitalllagain · 14/06/2023 13:54

The main draw is being able to book a two bedroom room! Annoyingly not available through Jet2 or we'd just book through them then try and upgrade to all inc when we get there.

I haven't booked a package for years. You always get a better deal booking separately

But you don't always, not if you compare like with like.
This always comes up on these threads.
I think if you want to fly Ryanair or such with no luggage at an unsocial hour from Gatwick you will do it cheaper.

I usually book with Jet2 and ALWAYS compare. Maybe it's because I do all the upgrades for the best room / sea view etc but it's rare that I can better the price by booking separately and I want good seats, extra legroom etc.

quick google shows a few news stories - strikes in the UK or at destination, staffing issues. agree jet2 are much better than easyjet/ryanair.

I never do package holidays and book transfers through Hoppa or Holiday Extras. Saves so much money and as you've found, they often save the best rooms for those that book direct. This year for all four (3 adults 1 child) of us I've got TUI flights from my local airport to Corfu for £1000 with luggage. Accommodation (SC but we'll eat out) £700 for two weeks. Go the week they break up for summer. Oh and Transfer to hotel and back £54. Book with credit card and pay off for extra protection.

userxx · 14/06/2023 15:33

Is baggage allowance included with just flights ? if not, that needs to be factored in.

Purplepepsi · 14/06/2023 19:20

Maybe talk to an independent travel agent, and ask them to package it for you? Ours did!

Coffeepot72 · 14/06/2023 19:29

We generally do packages with TUI or Jet2. Sometimes this is the cheaper option, sometimes not, but everything is taken care of, and I like that. Last year our flight was delayed 24 hours, and TUI let us stay in our hotel for an extra 24hrs, at no extra cost, and then paid us £350 each compensation when we got home. So package’s get my vote

Ffaldiri · 14/06/2023 19:31

Have you looked at easyJet holidays? They're always much cheaper. We've had no problems with them.

Alittlebitolderandeeperindebt · 14/06/2023 20:04

have you called jet2 and asked about the 2 bed- they are usually really great

doingitalllagain · 14/06/2023 21:54

We've booked the flights through Jet2 and the hotel directly through H10 now. We booked on credit card to be safe and have travel insurance so fingers crossed all will be ok!
