Crazy to go to Canada in August?

We're looking to book a bucket list trip with older teens to Calgary, drive to Whistler and then down to Vancouver at the beginning of August.

Does anyone have any experience of how long the forest fires are likely to last? I've heard they started much earlier this year but I'm not sure if I'm mad to think the fires will all be out/ under control in 6 weeks time?

Not sure I would risk it tbh but I don’t know exactly where the fires are and Canada is a big country! DS works for the RFS here in Aus and has been asked to go to reinforce local firefighters for six weeks leaving next week so it sounds like they are not expecting things to last a while.

Are the fires not currently on East side of Canada?

HermioneWeasley · 13/06/2023 08:07

The fires are on the other side of a very, very big country

I don't think it's a crazy idea but I would be fully prepared for there to be wildfires on the western side of Canada. There are a few in Alberta at the moment and I would imagine there us every chance this could continue throughout the summer.

I'd carry on and go ahead. Google has a wildfires search you can do.

We went a few years ago when the fires were in full force and hitting the news. we flew into Calgary through Banff and Jasper, across to Whistler and out through Vancouver. The sky was very misty which affected air quality but it was ok, the only thing that did cause a problem is we were supposed to be having a sea plane flight from Vancouver island back to the mainland but they cancelled and we had to get the ferry. We didn’t actually see any fires but here’s a few pics so you can see the impact, these were all taken in the middle of the day. For the most part though it was normal with blue skies etc it was just every now and then it sat low like the pics.

The only thing I would say is for most of these places there is literally only one, admittedly very good, road that goes from place to place so if they have to close it you’re screwed. So maybe check the locations first if you can.

Thank you for replying everyone. We're booking thru Trailfinders so I will ask what their support is if we need to rearrange accommodation

My BIL lives near Edmonton, there are fires near him

Well I am doing just this. I'm worried but I want to go in summer not winter so 🤷‍♀️

We went to Ontario for a wedding same time and it was incredibly buggy and humid.
