"Why you going there for?" before you go on holiday, like it's an awful choice.

Anyone else experienced this? It really winds me up.

"because you're not!" Complete with MN head tilt and tinkly laugh

Flatandhappy · 09/06/2023 02:00

I get this all the time, it is so rude. We spend 2-3 months a year in Bali and often get the “Bali is a dump, I’d never go there” comments. I can’t be bothered even having the conversation any more, I just smile and say “that’s an interesting perspective” which is my version of “I couldn’t give a shit what you think”.

Glowly · 09/06/2023 02:32

Yes. Even with countries that aren't particularly unheard of as holiday destinations. Belgium and Austria for example. I don't think either of them are 'out there', but when I told family I was going there for my summer holiday, they replied with 'what you going there for'👀

Neverinamonthofsundays · 09/06/2023 06:00

When I told my mum where we are going this year her reply was 'oh is that not very hot there'?.

Yes. That is exactly why we are going. I think people just like to have a comment.

Yerroblemom1923 · 09/06/2023 06:04

I'm guessing they ask because it's not somewhere they'd think to holiday and want to know the appeal? May be a genuine question and they may not necessarily be being snide.

highlandspooce · 09/06/2023 06:31

I would literally say because I want to. Then go on about the things I want to see/do.

I'm autistic and wouldn't necessarily pick up the tone in the question though. However even if I did I would still respond the same way.

MelonsOnSaleAgain · 09/06/2023 06:37

I would say “because I like it there” or “because I haven’t been before”.

people can be so rude!

Marchintospring · 09/06/2023 06:47

Well it might be an awful choice to them?
I don’t think holidays are the same as things like clothes, houses or pets where it’s rude to comment as they’re longer term.
People like to do different things even on the same holiday . It’s possible you can have a great time with the right people wherever you are so I wouldn’t take offence.

I normally answer it was an absolute bargain. Which mine normally are. Can’t argue with that.

snowlady4 · 09/06/2023 06:53

Yes!!!
Last holiday in Egypt... oh I'd never go there! (Criticise places you've been, not places you haven't!)
Next holiday is Jamaica... oh why there? (I want to go!) Thats a strange place to pick! (Is it? A really popular carribean island!)
When people tell me they're going on holidays to somewhere that's not my cup of tea, I just say, "lovely, it'll be great to get away, have you been before?" Or something along those lines.
People are just so RUDE!

sorrynotathome · 09/06/2023 06:55

I would just laugh at their inability to string a proper sentence together. Is it a toddler saying this?

People said this to me too before my most recent holiday!
Will it not be very hot there? I just said, hopefully- they have a beach, pools and aircon so should be great!

This. Literally takes the same amount of time to say this, is neutral and doesn't make you sound like a dick Grin

both me and my husband have a habit of going to places that are not normal tourist hotspots (this has only increased since we met) and hear it a lot.

i don’t normally pay any head but depending on their response i go for a few:
’because I’ve always wanted to see/do….”
’oh when we’re you there?’ (Normally they haven’t and it makes them look judgemental 😭)
”we have friends there”
“because why not, same old, same old is boring”

i inherited my dad’s desire to keep trying new places but even he once questioned a place I was visiting with the school calling it ‘boring’ ….. he’s since been and has been back more times than anywhere else he has visited - I remind him of it all
the time 😂😂😂

What weird & wonderful places can you recommend?

I like unconventional destinations myself. Friends go to Benidorm every year and love it. Different strokes for different folks.
