Hi
Im goimg away in a couple of weeks so I applied for a Barclays credit card as it doesnt seem to have online charges, has anyone used them?
Also I noticed I got a confirmation screen at the end saying my application was successful but no confirmation email was this normal?
Is there any other credit cards I should consider instead fir use abroad?

Thanks in advance

Halifax do one specifically for use abroad due to its exchange rate benefits can't remember exactly what it is now. But if you've just applied for one you don't want to apply for another with in six months as it'll impact your credit score.

Halifax Clarity is the credit card you want for use abroad.

Also a Halifax Clarity used here, but do a mini/pretend application on the money saving expert website first because it won't affect your credit score like @Singleandproud says

It's not online charges you need to check for,it's currency exchange fees.

Starling is a good one. it's quick to get and good if you go anywhere that charges for credit cards. Just put money in the account and spend as normal.

If the machine asks if you want to pay in pounds always decline and choose the local currency.

Do you specifically need a credit card?

We all use Revolut when abroad. Load it with money in the local currency and spend using either the card or app on your phone (contactless).

You can add more money on the app whenever you need to.

Halifax clarity is the best, used it all over the world

We used the Barclaycard rewards card for a holiday earlier this year. No charges for withdrawals or using the chip n pin.

We have virgin cards that don’t charge abroad. No issues.

I have halifax and barclays. Barclays, when I last looked, was marginally better. Neither charge a fee for spending or withdrawals when abroad and neither charge interest on spending, unless you don't pay off your full balance on time. The one difference is that halifax will start charging interest on withdrawals immediately, whereas barclays only charge interest if you don't pay off the full balance on time.

If you want a card you can add money to with no fees rather than a credit card then a Monzo card is a good option, no fees to use abroad.

Do you mean a barclaycard? (Different from Barclays Bank!) - if so yes they are fine for abroad..

StarlightLady · 09/06/2023 12:54

Barclays offer different credit cards with varying fee rates overseas.
