Going for couple of days later this month, staying Dupont Circle area and looking for top tips. Thanks!

I live in the DC area! Good suggestions above for museums. Food has improved a lot and there are many good eateries on 14th St NW- le diplomate a favorite place but you have to book. Eastern Market on Capitol Hill is another nice area to browse. If you like biking, rent a bike because the distances between museums etc can be a bit far on foot but perfect on 2 wheels. You can also go up and down the path by the river. We live in Alexandria which is another historic town just outside Dc down the river- fun to visit by boat. Hope you enjoy it here!

Hoping Alexandria is still as gorgeous as it used to be. I lived in Old Town for 3 years. Havent been back in a long time. But for OP it is a lovely small town to visit. Is the Torpedo factory still open? And there used to be all sorts of walking tours.

You can stop off if you are driving down to Mount Vernon from DC.

DC definitely has public transport.

Plus Uber and Lyft.

Even though you'll probably feel you're slowly boiling to death outdoors, bring a cardigan and a bag you can fit it into because indoor air-conditioned spaces can feel quite chilly. You may have to submit to a bag check when entering various museums (the Holocaust museum is one I recall, but there were a couple of others), but they are usually very cursory.

The zoo is amazing- and free! We got a bus there

We did a Segway tour which was a great way to see the main sites in an afternoon.

We loved Washington DC! The zoo and the air museum were wonderful. Try to walk as much as possible to get a sense of where you are, but the metro was great (no idea what the PP meant by non-existent 😂)
Also we really loved the pizza by Capitol Hill called We, The Pizza
