Special Holiday for Big Birthday

I'm looking for something just a little different for a big birthday next year and would love some ideas. Just me and my OH and max of £2500 pp I think. Would love a luxury rail trip, river cruise or a cruise of some sort but so much is too expensive. Just something a bit different.... I like good food and relaxing with a big of sightseeing/culture/bit of walking maybe. I'm just so stuck on ideas and would love to hear what others might have done.

I’ve never been but I’d love to visit Vancouver & cruise up through Alaska. I’m sure you could get this in your budget.

I’d also love to do the Rocky Mountaineer train but this may be over budget!!

Ive also seen some good deals on a Royal Caribbean cruise around Japan that includes a 3 night stay in Tokyo. Price was around £3300 but that includes all of your food so although over your initial budget, may be within your overall budget.

We have done an Alaskan cruise from Vancouver and would highly recommend it. Just choose a ship/cruise line that suits you. We did it at the end of 2 weeks driving across the Rockies. I don’t think you could do both for your budget now.
We more recently have done a tour of Vietnam and Cambodia which included a couple of nights on a boat in Halong Bay and and another few nights travelling along the Mekong. It included overnight train journeys as well as coaches. Loved it. Went with Mercury Holidays Looks like prices start at £2699 if you can stretch your budget a bit (obviously you need some spending money but most meals included)
I think you would love it https://www.mercuryholidays.co.uk/destination/south-east-asia/vietnam/holidays/rail-journeys/vietnam-and-cambodia-odyssey?_its=JTdCJTIydmlkJTIyJTNBJTIyZmFiMmE0MTUtYzMyZi00YjRlLTkyMDMtODVkZDI2Y2U4ZWViJTIyJTJDJTIyc3RhdGUlMjIlM0ElMjJybHR%2BMTY4NTU2MjE2OH5sYW5kfjJfODM2Njlfc2VvXzI1MTBiYTBmNGVjZmEzMDc5OTA1ZTZmN2VkZTBjNGQwJTIyJTJDJTIyc2l0ZUlkJTIyJTNBMTE3MTclN0Q%3D

Norway? I think you can combine a train journey and also a cruise on the fjords

HundredMilesAnHour · 31/05/2023 21:01

Different from other suggestions so far....we have 5 nights booked in a lovely hotel (Kimpton) plus premium economy flights to New Orleans for £1,400pp in the BA sale. Great food, and lots to see and do.

crew2022 · 31/05/2023 21:04

A cruise on the Norwegian Fjords from Southampton? The prices do fluctuate but I reckon you could do it fir your budget if you look around.

travailtotravel · 31/05/2023 22:01

A scandi trip? We're just back from Stockholm. You could do a that with Copenhagen/Oslo. Mind, was ££!. Douro you can get about up the river and get the train back. Italy by train? Sooo many options!

Thanks for all the ideas. Will explore further. Lots to think about.

The Railway Touring Company have a selection of holidays that might fit the bill. Their dates are fixed though. Not just rail, they have some mixed trips with part rail and part river/lake cruise.

OH has a big birthday this year.We have spent months trying to decide how to celebrate We fancied the Rocky Mountaineer but was way too expensive. Also looked at a Norwegian Cruise but ships seemed so huge!
We are off to Bergen in Norway and travelling on the Flam railway which was a cheaper alternative to Rocky Mountaineer. Also staying in a beautiful hotel with a Viking pub next door and on the shores of a beautiful fjord.
Have fun , whatever you decide!
