Hello. Hoping to do holiday in the summer combining city and beach. Has anyone done this and if so did you stay in city or out in say Sitges and then just day trip into city? Thank you

Can’t comment on Stiges but have stayed in the Poublenou district of Barcelona, which was only about 5 metro stops away from the city centre.
Lovely atmosphere in the area, pavement restaurants, playgrounds etc and walking distance from the beach.
Would probably go to a resort further outside Barcelona if I was going for a week or more but as a shorter break it was a great base to enjoy both the city and the beach.

Week in Barcelona here staying in the old town. Walked to the beach from there. Do you have kids?

Thank you, one child 17 which is why I thought a beach / city combo might work!

We stayed at Casteldelfels at the beach for a week and travelled in to Barcelona a couple of days. It was a really good choice for us. Trains were very regular and so cheap, meant we could go into Barcelona but also along the coast in the other direction to other seaside resorts.

I wouldn’t dream of going to Barcelona for the beach.

it is a phenomenal city. So much to do. And the beach is just one brilliant addition to that BUT not good enough to make it an actual beach holiday

PARunnerGirl · 31/05/2023 06:29

I used to live in BCN. It just depends on what you want to be closer to but you can easily stay in the city and walk to the beach, or get the metro out to other beaches (and vice versa). No need to stay as far out as Sitges for the beach, although you can of course.

What does your teen like to do? Salou is great for theme park /waterpark /beaches etc and is easily travellable to barcelona for day trips or do a split site?

FeedMeWell · 31/05/2023 07:26

Poblenou is a great place to stay with a teenager. It is a great combination of city and beach. Lots of nice places to eat which are cheaper than closer to the centre but really easy access to the centre too. You can either get the bus/metro or walk along the beachfront to Barceloneta and into the centre.

Sitges Is lovely. You can walk everywhere and the beach is nice

Maddy70 · 31/05/2023 08:31

Sitges is lovely. It's around 30-40 mins away on the train

Less pickpockety and stunning with easy distance to the city

Barcelona has its own beaches too beware of pickpockets on the beaches

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 31/05/2023 09:39

We stayed in Sitges and got the train into Barcelona as a day trip - it's not far at all. DH and DS also went in to watch a football match - if your teen is into that kind of thing they can also do ground tours .

I really liked Sitges as a resort - big enough to have plenty of bars, restaurants, shops and a decent walk along the front - but not too built up and town-like. Sandy beach too.

I've literally just booked this trip for me and my 17 year old son. He really wants to visit Barcelona and as this will be our main holiday I wanted a relaxing beach place too so I've booked a hotel in Pineda de Mar. I would have loved Sitges but we are on a budget and so I've booked a package with Tui. Hoping to spend a couple of days in Barcelona, maybe a trip to Girona and a couple of trips to nearby resorts.
It will be our first holiday just the two of us... I've booked for 10 days. I made surf the hotel has a gym he can escape to!

Stigues was a great town and my family and I loved the beach. The sea was really warm and had the perfect sized waves for us - it was so much fun.

We did it the other way round. We stayed on Las Ramblas and had a)time on the beach in the city which was lovely and a day in Sitges, also lovely (but quite crowded).

Thanks everyone for the ideas, this has been so helpful.

Just got back this week from 5 nights with our kids in Vilanova I La Geltru, the next town on from Sitges. Great location although the town is nowhere near as pretty as Sitges, far more residential/surbubia I'd say than Sitges but significantly cheaper to stay in. We went into Barcelona twice, really easy trains, running regularly. We also got the train from the airport there, which saved a lot. We paid £1200 for flights and accommodation.
