Hi

1st world problem but inspiration and info very much welcome

i have a paid 6 week sabbatical in 2024 . Dh can take time off.

we have 3 dc who will be: 12 / 7/ 9.5

Absolutely no idea what to do... any inspiration

So far:
Lots of positives but can settle on anything some ideas floated

US road trip -lots of positives but wirh so many desired from yellowstone to Disney comes with negatives eg loads of driving and might not be fun for children

Argentina skiing / boarding - is that just too much snow!

Greek Islands- just chill and be together or negative - not doing enough with time

Long haul SE Asia eg Thailand and see culture and do beaches - I've not researched this much - last time i was backpacking and 19... or coupled up professional and diving is it good for kids?

Not fussed on NZ or Oz.

Any ideas???

Definitely long haul, so you can fit in all the stuff you can't normally. SE Asia would be my first choice - so much to do with kids from beaches to Angkor Wat etc. Maybe China?

Oh or India. I'd love to go back now with a bit more money and retrace our backpacking steps and see the south this time too.

But then DH and I have always loved the idea of backpacking from south to north up the west coast of South America - Chile, Peru, Ecuador - then maybe fly to Cuba, or see Mexico.

Europe. Motorhome?

South America or Africa touring a couple of countries.

Vietnam and Cambodia. Lots of history and beaches. Hanoi Halong Bay boat for couple of nights in north Area around Hoi An centrally lovely beaches. South to Ho Chi Minh City then Cambodia again history Pol Pot Killing fields etc Angkor Wat
Great for children of this age to get experience of different cultures and history

Doesnt the time of year impact choice?

I assume summer holiday? If they are at state schools they risk being deregistered if they take 6 weeks off in term time

Sabbaticaldreams · 31/05/2023 01:25

Thanks all.

Would be uk summer holidays for 6 weeks.

Looks like se Asia is doable. Will research more as to what places to stay etc how to get around.

Thanks

I know it would be crazy hot but if you're thinking of ever taking the DC to Disney America then this is your chance really. I'd combine it with a couple of other locations though, with minimal driving. Let's say:

2 weeks at villa near Disney, do the parks plus waterparks etc, days out at everglades, alligator tour etc.

Fly to second US destination: Chicago, great lakes, detroit, Toronto (Canada obvs). Spend 2 weeks there.

Fly back to Europe but not UK. Or via South America perhaps, for the last 2 weeks.

Enjoy!

Fly Paris to Antananarivo, Madagascar.
Go to Isle Saint Marie and do some humpback whale spotting, and beach time.
Go back to mainland and head to the national park en route to Tana to spot the Indri Indri (largest Lemur, amazing sound).
Then either Fly to Nosy Be for more beaches, lemurs, island hopping, learning to dive, or Fort Dauphin for surf school, and the only place you can see ringtail Lemurs in the (semi) wild.

I would say 3-4 weeks for this would be perfect. With remaining time, I would fly to Johannesburg, hire a car and go to Kruger, God's window etc.

We've been to Sri Lanka, Borneo and Vietnam and UK summer. All for just over 2 weeks but could have easily stayed longer.
With air Asia short haul flights, you could book a return to Kuala Lumpur, explore the mainland then hop to kota Kinabalu and travel around Malaysian Borneo (Sabah and Sarawak), Indonesian Borneo too. Or Indonesia's islands.
Plenty of places for chilling and adventure.
Vietnam was done by flying to Bangkok and then short air Asia flight to Hanoi, then train travelling south (night trains are fun).
Sri Lanka is amazing but politically difficult at the moment. We had 2.5 weeks and I could have easily stayed twice that.
