Hi
I’m looking for somewhere in July or August next year. Characterful, things to do including boat trips, snorkelling would be a bonus. And we’ll be with our older teens (21,18,16) so a bit of a nightlife.

Any recommendations? 🙏 Thanks.

Following! Have heard/seen good things about Cassis and Ile de Re, interested to hear others views. When I was a kid we used to go to Biarritz which might be good for your DC?

Morlaix in Brittany is lovely. Bike hire from Tourist Information. 2 km away from National Forest. A huge Aqueduct to climb over. Walk around the port with boats. Old medieval houses and markets twice each week. Large swimming pool complex 3 km away with 3 pools, 1 with lanes swimming, 1 for younger children the other a large fun pool with basketball hoop, a high flume and jacuzzi. Lots of little shops and restaurants and pavement cafes. The beach is 20 mins away with a high diving platform and volleyball net and mini golf and petanque too. Even a Subway and pizzas if kids prefer that. An island out in the sea you can get to by boat.

Oh brilliant thanks. I will check these out.

@bravotango that’s funny as I’ve been to Ile de Re (lovely) and have been looking at Cassis!

We enjoyed Biarritz.

redfacebigdisgrace · 26/05/2023 20:55

@tracylamont13 thanks- that was one I was looking at. What did you do? Is it an attractive town?

Argeles-sur-Mer has snorkelling and boat trips. It’s actually got a diving centre too.

Twilightstarbright · 27/05/2023 19:05

Biarritz is lovely but expensive. Lots of surf schools and a day trip to San Sebastián is a must.

KnickerlessParsons · 27/05/2023 19:19

Ste Maxime, St Aygulf, Fréjus, Les Issambres and anywhere along that piece of coast. Stay inland a bit, somewhere like Roquebrune.

redfacebigdisgrace · 27/05/2023 19:58

@Twilightstarbright what about just staying at San Sebastián instead? It looks lovely! Biarritz looks a bit tower blocky, or maybe I’ve got that’s wrong.

I like Bandol. There are 2 beaches - the one by the Casino has very fine white sand, the one by the golf hôtel is coarser. Used to be quite reasonable - about 20 years ago.

San Sebastian is a wonderful place. Weather hit and miss sometimes, but that's made up for by the amazing beach area and the old town pintxo bars, the night time atmosphere around the many pedestrian alleys is amazing. I combined three days there with four days in Bayonne in France not too far away. Flew into Bilbao for a night to see the Guggenheim, then down to San Seb (or Donostia in Basque), then to Bayonne.

I went to Biarritz for the day but found it a bit pretentious, so scarpered quickly. Flew home from Biarritz on a bus from Bayonne to the airport that cost €1 - bargain! I also took the train from Bayonne to St. Jean de Pied de Port for the day which is the starting point of the Camino Frances (de Santiago). Charming place and great to look at all the walkers starting out on their 1,000 mile trek, all races creeds ages and nationalities. Great atmosphere.

I did it all by bus and train. Great adventure and I did it by myself, so proud of that too, sorry for the self praise.

We had a great holiday in Hondarribia which is a bus ride away to San Sebastián/Donostia . Fab bars, lovely beaches and restaurants and ferry over to Hendaye in France. Lots of surfing and paddle boarding going on.

Combined with a few days in Bilbao which is an amazing city.

Ohfgsjon · 27/05/2023 21:21

La Rochelle.

redfacebigdisgrace · 27/05/2023 21:55

Hi @KnickerlessParsons thanks .I’ll check those out. Definitely want to be walkable to the sea as not hiring a car.

One of the best holidays I ever had was in Cannes/Nice. We also went up yo Monaco for the casino 🎰

It's absolutely gorgeous there with amazing beaches, food, sights and nightlife

Twilightstarbright · 28/05/2023 06:51

@redfacebigdisgrace Biarritz isn’t tower blocky at all!

I love San Sebastián and would highly recommend it but it’s not a French seaside town and the culture is different. Biarritz is lovely and very much where French people go on holiday.
