i went once to Tangiers may years ago and found it not very nice but i was young and with a group of female friends
my husband and me are thinking of maybe marrakesh/ fez later this year. any advice on what it would be like?
we like culture food scenery .
would not want to drive but would be willing to pay for quite luxurious accommodation.

I love Morocco.
fez is delightful but the actual city would get a bit dull after a few days but you can use it as a base for some tours and excursions. Chefchaouen is an absolute must see if you go to fez. however Marrakesh is better for trips to the mountains or desert, but the city itself is a bit more full on than fez.

Agadir is my personal favourite. Then Casablanca.

Nice but can be dangerous. Put your backpack on the front and will be ok 😂
I am half Moroccan so I’ve seen how they treat my dad (native) vs my mum (white lady) and concluded that they try to make as much money as possible from tourists. Lots of street cats, my dad always came back to England with scratched arms. Memories… 😊

I love it. We stayed on the outskirts of Marrakesh and got the hotel shuttle bus into the city when we wanted to visit.

It gave us the best of both worlds: a quiet resort and the option of hustle and bustle in the souk.

orangelotus · 28/05/2023 22:05

that's what my husband wants guaranteed good weather and cultural stuff combined with relaxation.
i'm still. wary woukd you mind saying where you stayed?

We recently went to Agadir and loved it, I felt very safe although it was a culture shock to begin with. We stayed at Iberostar founty beach which we liked but would probably go for one of the 5stars further along the beach next time. We did lots of excursions which felt like a good mix for us of comfy holiday comforts but seeing parts of the real country too.

ive stayed here 3 times and love it. 15 min walk from the main square and souks. I love marrakech and you can do a trip out to the mountains as well. I find it works well for a long weekend. I prefer Marrakech to fez which i found more claustrophobic.

great food and rugs too.

We are very blonde (not sure if that's why) and didn't like it at all. I was constantly harassed, never felt safe, thought it was a really sexist culture.

orangelotus · 28/05/2023 22:25

hmmm that's why i didn't like tangiers a million years ago.
also found Turkey very male aggressive but had my young daughter and niece with me so felt on constant alert.
i'm an old bag now so that won't be an issue although i still dislike that whole vibe

Tangiers is not nice imho. Like you said. Larache is OK and Chefchaouen is a nice day trip.

I personally preferred both Egypt and Turkey to either Morocco or Tunisia.

DH and I went for two weeks over Easter this with DD7, had the best time. We stayed in Essouria, Marrakesh in a riad and also in a hotel slightly out of town and did a trip into Sahara. Highly recommend!

This was the hotel in Essouria which was just gorgeous and the city itself is really chilled and cool place to explore.

This was hotel we stayed in Marrakech, the riad we stayed at was fine but there are better but this hotel was lovely, was nice to escape the crazy too and have some quiet time.

If you do go and you visit Marrakesh you have to go to the henna cafe, a not for profit organization who do henna, lovely food and all their money goes to feeding those in need in their community, they also have a resident pet tortoise that plods about. Also go to Amal women's centre for cookery lesson, wonderful experience and they do such incredible work supporting women in need.

I'm blonde too btw and didn't once feel unsafe or experience any harassment, was with my DH and DD so may have played a part. We found everyone to be really welcoming and friendly and this was whilst fasting in super hot temps!
