Easyjet seat allocations - none left together at check-in

Hi - anyone made my mistake previously and can you advise me? Booked my Easyjet flights ages back and now flying out on Friday but haven't booked in till now. I believe I chose seats, but then they changed the plane type, emailed me to re-select them and I just... kind of.. forgot.

So now there are no seats left together! We are a family of five - three kids, 11, 13, 14 - but none are independent types who want to sit alone for four hours to Greece!

So, I clicked 'randomly allocate seats', as the choice today seemed to be to either pay for seats not together, or to not pay for seats not together.

So we are now placed all over the flight. I did book speedy boarding way back when I booked the flight, but that seems too late a point on Friday to flag it to Easyjet. Should I chase this now by email/phone or go to the bag drop and raise it? (Ironic that I efficiently don't have bags to check....)

The small print says under-12s cannot sit alone anyway, but I wondered if anyone else had been a berk like me and could you tell me what you did or would advise??

Thanks!! DH stressing and acting like it's ruined the whole holiday....

I flew to Thailand on emirates in 2000 and it was smoking all the way! 😁

@Meredusoleil you must have had a hiatus in your flying days as it was definitely still a thing until the early 1990s

My goodness, what year was that then? I've been flying since I was 6 months old (now nearly 48 years) and never remember a smoking section on the planes! The no smoking lights would always stay on throughout the flight as far back as I can remember 😯

I remember a smoking section on international flights in the 90s.

@Meredusoleil i smoked on a plane in 2000 - definitely wasn’t banned that long ago!

I PREDICT A RIOT

This is the first of many this summer, it will range from how ditsy am I, to how very dare they seat us all over the plane when we were clearly to tight to pay.

Yawn, Yawn, fucking yawn..

It might be nice to have some peace and quiet.

I dream of a solo flight without someone asking me for snacks/ books/ toys or handing me empty packets (to do what with 🙄?).

@Meredusoleil...I worked for one of the major airline handling companies in the 1980s, checking in passengers, smoking and non smoking sections were available on every flight, pretty pointless I always thought as you were all sharing the same cylindrical space with he same air circulating round the cabin but how people would kick off if they couldn't get what they wanted.

[/apologises to OP for continued thread drift]

The timing of the ban depended on where you were in the world and I wish I could find a reference for UK operations...

From memory (I worked as long haul crew, UK airline late 80's onwards) there was smoking onboard in 89/90, it was banned shortly thereafter,so maybe 92/93'ish.

notimagain · 25/05/2023 07:02

oh for an edit function...

Just found reference to to my former lot banning it in 98, I'll admit later than I thought but before 2000. Other UK airlines had a similar timescale.

I remember smoking was banned between member states by the EU in 1997. Think there was something around the same time between UK and USA as some transatlantic deal.

I’m (a little) younger than you and I remember the hell of the smoking section on planes. I think it was late eighties that it stopped on the routes I travelled (mostly UK to Asia).

Hi again..yes it seems my memory was a bit off.

Some time after I posted that comment I came across some old sources that would tie it all in with the '97 date you've come up with, so a bit later than I recalled.

ATB.

How did it go @AliceKeely

legalbeagleneeded · 26/06/2023 07:50

We couldn't check in on line (long story but we basically didn't have any adults on the booking that had the childrens tickets on it) and got told on phone we had to check in at the airport.

My 13 year old was ecstatic to be on her own.
They managed to find a seat for my 2 year old next to me.
My 11 and 9 year olds sat about 3 rows back
My husband was on his own and my 7 year old was up the front next to a very nice lady ( better on his own as would behave against sat next to brother who he would get up to mischief with). I just talked him through it and he was fine about it.

He was very cross when the lady originally sat next to me practically ran up the aisle to swap with him (leaving her own children across the aisle with her husband!!). But really don't count on anyone swapping with you.

Admittedly we sat together but when we were 12, 10 and 7, my parents booked us into the non smoking section of the plane and they sat in the smoking section further back (!)

This happened to me and my brother when we were 12 (me) and 15. No worries. We loved it.
