I'm on a Sicily FB group and everything is fine. The airport is open. Etna erupts often. The locals are not fussed. I think the cable car going up Etna was even open today.

No, it erupts a lot of the time, free fireworks show!

Where are you staying, big island

Hell no do not cancel! Sicily is amazing, particularly Mount Etna.

Have a look at Airbnb's aswell, there are some spectacular ones! The one we stated in on Stromboli was unreal but has no availability until October now but the one we stayed at in Catania may have availability in August and the view of Etna from the roof-top terrace were incredible.

Have a look at Syracuse, Taormina and the beaches of Mazzaro and Isola Bella.

We're going to Cefalu in August 😀 can't wait.
Not worried about Etna. It's one of the most active volcanoes in the world. It erupts all the time and rarely affects civilization below aside from a bit of ash, afaik.

We were in Sicily when Etna was erupting quite a few years ago.

It took a little bit of getting used to the fact that there was lava running down it. I was a bit alarmed at first. However, the locals don't bat an eyelid. It does it all the time.

It actually looks spectacular at night.

@PinkPondQueen we are staying at that hotel mid June! Did you recommend it on another thread?? If so, that’s probably why I booked it!!

PinkPondQueen · 25/05/2023 21:29

Yes I did! Amazing, I hope you will love it! We were in Castelmola again 2 weeks ago but unfortunately Etna was in cloud and didn't make an appearence until the day we left to fly home. We'll be in Sicily again in October, just love the place 😍

Kath544 · 26/05/2023 13:49

@PinkPondQueen amazing!! Thank uou so much. The recommendation really helped as I was starting to struggle with Taormina prices. It is my husband’s 40th present so we are really looking forward to it - without kids!! Is there anywhere you would particularly recommend to eat/visit? X

PinkPondQueen · 26/05/2023 15:25

Yeah, comparable rooms in Taormina with views like that are far more expensive! Castelmola is much nicer than Taormina aswell I think - far less touristy but Teatro Greco is well worth a visit and it's so nice to get the cable car down to the stunning beaches at Mazzaro and Isola Bella. The bus stops right outside the hotel to take you down to Taormina!

We had delicious food and wine at La Caverna next door to the hotel and also delicious pizza at Bar Turrisi (try and get a table on one of the upper balconies for a view). Also if you walk around the corner on the right from the square in front of Bar Turrusi there is a panoramic terrace in front of St Nicholas' Church with an unbelievable view of Etna and the coast! Especially at sunset. We also ate at La Taverna del Etna but the food wasn't great and there is only a good view from the very front tables on the terrace which are booked months in advance.

I am quite sure your husband is going to have an amazing 40th.. !
