Air bnb deposit cheque request? Scam?

Just reserved an air bnb for 3 nights at a beach resort in Europe and the host has asked us to bring a 1400 euro cheque as a deposit to be handed over when we check in, as well as pay separately for bed/bath linen. No mention of this “deposit” or linen payment in the house rules or reviews. Replied back that provide a cheque for euros and host has asked for cash instead!

Is this a scam and should we cancel immediately?

Cannot provide a cheque in euros.

Yes. Don't make any payments outside of airbnb, unless it's say 5 euros for a city tax.

Do not pay any damage deposit outside of the Airbnb system - it should be included in the Airbnb payment, as should the linen charge and any cleaning charge. Anything else is a scam or a tax dodge. - except local Tourist Taxes, which are often paid in cash to the landlord (and for which you should get a receipt or Tourist Card).

Ok we’ve cancelled the booking.

Is it worth telling Airbnb, or just letting it go?

Do tell them. It’s really important that air BnB know
