River Cruise

Has anyone every been on a river cruise before that they could recommend. It's just for my partner and me and we're in our late 50s (but young at heart!). Would like nice food and some interesting stops on the way but generally open to ideas.

I cannot recommend Scenic enough. In March I went to Cambodia and Vietnam and cruises along the Mekong river.
This Autumn I’ve booked a European river cruise with Scenic with a Transylvanian tour added on afterwards.
When I was on the Cambodian holiday I looked at quite a few other ship and the layout looked similar to our one. I think it was an Emerald one that looked very nice.
Honestly they are such relaxing holidays.

I feel that DH at 74 and me at 65 are officially old enough to do a river cruise. I wouldn't know how to choose though, so will look at Scenic. I'd love the Mekong but DH has a 3 hour maximum flight limit so it would be Europe. I love Germany and there are lots of Rhine cruises.

I am 54 and was the youngest, the other guests may have been older but they are not old in their attitudes. They were all a lot of fun and I loved meeting like minded people and listening to their previous adventures. Normally I never make friends on holiday but because the ship had so few passengers it was very sociable. I did a three day tour before the cruise with Scenic so made friends with my group of eight travellers and have stayed in touch with an American couple.

I can’t see how you can go wrong if you choose an itinerary you like the look of. Then pick one that matches your budget, also check what’s included drinks and excursions wise.

We did one down the Yangtze. Really enjoyed it as part of a bigger China trip, chengdu to Shanghai.

We did a shorter one in Peruvian Amazon, that was also amazing and quite different as wildlife was the focus.

We are planning a Mekong Delta trip.

I really fancy this. Emerald Cruises seem quite reasonably priced and often have special offers. DH thinks they are for old people - he's 66 this year. 😁

We did a Danube cruise with AMAWaterways. Very posh and expensive, well organized, but most passengers were very old Americans; in our late 50s we were the youngest. It was dreary in that regard. And many seemed rude/entitled.

I always love the look of those river cruise holidays. Kind of looking forward to being older to be able to go on them as only 43 now!

It's the social bit that puts me off. We are not sociable people, can easily go on holiday for two weeks and never speak to anyone other than a waiter. I'd hate to have to share a table and make small talk.

We've done 9, & love them. Age group tends to be 50+, and never seen a child on board.
Pick your country, & compare the various tour operators. Some include drinks & tips, some charge extra for excursions. Also check whether flights are included.
In Europe, we've had good trips with Avalon, Viking & Riviera. Very poor with Croisi Europe & Saga.

Thank you for all the comments so far. I started looking at the Scenic cruises which do look amazing (thinking just a European one). I did wonder whether we might be the youngest! I realise everything is included but they're not cheap are they?! I'll look at other options too and then check my bank balance I think!
