Going to N Greece this week and the weather looks terrible

We fly to Halkidiki on Thursday for a week. I know we're very lucky to be going but the weather forecast looks terrible. I'm not a sun worshipper anyway but the kids were really looking forward to playing in the pool which they definitely can't do if there are thunder and lightning storms every day 😒

We've had many rainy holidays in the UK but there doesn't appear to be anything really to do in Halkidiki in bad weather apart from a wine tour which we can't do with the kids. In the UK it wouldn't bother me as there's countless activities you can do indoors.

We'll be taking as many games and books as possible and we will have a car so we may drive to Thessaloniki one day but it's 90 minutes away so can't do that every day. Does anyone have any other ideas to make it a good holiday? The weather looks to be better here 😆

No we aren't staying at Sani. We'll be in a beautiful villa in the far East of the region.

A good few years ago we bailed out of a holiday where the temperature was forecast to be 45°. But rain and thunder are less predictable. It could end up being not bad at all, and even on rainy days there will be drier times to explore.

I just had a look at the forecast as I was there last week and we also had a dire forecast. In reality the apps weren’t that reliable. It was generally lovely and warm, mostly sunny and even when cloudy wasn’t cold. The rain was mainly over night apart from one day. You should find that overall it’s fine but appreciate that’s not ideal when you’re expecting wall to wall sunshine.

I'll hold my hands up and say it was my fault as I didn't realise it was in Northern Greece 😆

We've been to Rhodes, Crete etc in May half term before and always had beautiful weather. If I'd looked into it I wouldn't have booked Halkidiki in May.

We've booked Halkidiki in October, only availability with our schedules and the hotel.

We've been reading reviews as they're being posted now the seasons opened up, and we're in a mind to cancel also, with what we've spent on the holiday we're really wanting to be 100% happy.

I noticed the weather doesn't look to good either this week - let's hope it perks up.

I honestly just hoped for 20 to 21 degrees most days. I don't mind cloud.

Last May half term we were in The Algarve and it was cloudy most of the time and rained a bit. That was fine for us.

Thank you, I hope the apps are wrong.

Would you get your money back if you cancel now? I think go anyway. Thunder and lightning will probably last an hour max and then go back to sunshine.

No we wouldn't get any money back now. I think we'll go expecting the worst and if we're lucky and get a few days sun then it will be a bonus.
There's always lovely food, wine, playing cards and chilling watching films. I'm just a bit worried we will be bored. I do know how fortunate we are to be even going somewhere though.

My ds has recently been in Turkey.

They had the same forecast for 4 days in a row.

He was on a warm weather (swim) training camp 🤔🤣

In reality other than 1 day where it did actually thunder and lightning for about 12 hours on and off the weather was much better than it predicted.

Thessaloniki is lovely, everything is close together and indoors!

If you are up for a longer journey I'd do the Tomb of Philip of Macedon in Vergina, absolutely worth the trip.

I can't wait to go to Thessaloniki! It's too far to go more than once though as it will be over 90 mins away.

We're just going to enjoy being off work and being together whatever the weather is like. At least there will be no housework or cooking!

Just an update for anyone going. It's been beautifully hot and sunny since we arrived. Greek roads are something else to drive on though 🙃
