Where was your most disappointing holiday, and why?

I'll start off. Our most disappointing trip was to French Polynesia in the South Pacific. The scenario is stunning, but we found the people unhelpful and quite frankly, lazy, unless you were offering to pay them a lot of money to do something small.

Egypt.

Just vile, felt very uncomfortable there. The hotel was lovely and very nice staff but the second you step foot out of the hotel it gave me the creeps. We didn't go on any excursions due to this so we sat around the pool for 1 weeks, my mother then got food poisoning a few days before we were meant to leave.

The airport there was horrendous too, was so chaotic I didn't think we'd get our bags the other end.

BirbFriend · 18/05/2023 19:20

Same as other people, Turkey, Tunisia and Morocco.

Horrible pervy men openly shouting and leering at you, got groped twice in the street in Tunisia, in Morocco I was actually quite freaked out by the behaviour of some of the men. I didn't want to leave the hotel.

HappiDaze · 18/05/2023 19:21

Bali I hated it and couldn't wait to leave. I'd been backpacking around Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia but Bali was awful and I left after a couple of days. Thailand though I loved and have been back a few times although not for a few years now.

AnyFucker · 18/05/2023 19:25

I agree with Bali. A complete (literal) shit hole. When it rains (and by God it rains) the sewage runs down the streets. Full of rough Aussies for whom Bali is their Magaluf. I also got Bali belly and lost half a stone in a week. I literally had poo running down my legs (sorry, TMI).

Also, Majorca when it was 44 degrees every day. I got an allergic reaction to the heat/hives and when I tried to put suncream on I literally was on fire. I went home from that holiday whiter than when I arrived. The heatwave they had that year killed a record number of people.

FettleOfKish · 18/05/2023 19:32

I've been trying to come up with one but I even enjoyed the fortnight in Majorca that my (now) ex-husband left me halfway through. I enjoyed it a lot more after he'd gone to be honest.

The one I wouldn't repeat was Rome in July. Not our choice of dates as it was for a wedding and despite generally loving heat it was just relentless and became a trial just to get through each day.

Sad to read that about Bali as we're going later this year Sad

I am sorry for your bad experiences in Morocco. Mine was different and I went with a female friend the first time and alone the second time . Some years later I married a Moroccan man who met abroad , thought we were welcomed from all the family in Morocco. But I guess it all depends with what people you come in contact with .

Leopald · 18/05/2023 19:36

Two weeks in Fuerteventura over a decade ago. We ended up being jealous of the people leaving after a week.

Hotel was very nice apart from the pool was absolutely freezing (I had gone with visions of being able to teach 4 yr old to swim there and spending loads of time in the pool) and the kids club was actually a just room with toys in (I naively thought we would be able to pay for supervised activities). Evening entertainment was good, that was all that got us through it!

Haven't been on a holiday even vaguely resembling this since.

Crikeyalmightey · 18/05/2023 19:41

Cape Verde. Horrible hotel, creepy men on the beach looking to scam folk. I couldn't wait to leave.

thisisasurvivor · 18/05/2023 19:41

Beijing

Oh my lord
Hell

Utter hell

Total rip off taxi from airport to hotel

Went to get another taxi next day and we were in a car accident - the driver checked the car and got back in again couldn't care less

Then we were ripped off by a lady who said she wanted to practice English with us
Took us to a tea room for small cups of tea which came to 150 pounds

Then when we went to check out the hotel maids checked every single towel on the room took ages almost missed the flight out

Never ever again

Hell hole

Lolland in Denmark. We live in Denmark and had planned to do a charter holiday in Bulgaria as I'd got a FT job - woohoo! But along came corona and we were late to book anything. It was a house in the middle of nowhere. Had to drive to do anything. It did mean that the following year I made sure to book a nice holiday park in north Denmark which was LOVELY and we've been back since and are going again this summer.

Genzken · 18/05/2023 19:43

Cavtat in Croatia, i just hated it. I've been to Croatian Islands lots of times and loved them all the mainland just had a totally different feel to it. Couldn't wait to go home.

whiteroseredrose · 18/05/2023 19:43

Las Vegas and Dubai. Hot, sand and hotels. Very boring.

LightlySearedontheRealityGrill · 18/05/2023 19:46

Cornwall, the house was tiny and filthy, ground in dirt in the carpet floors walls etc. All the bedding and towels were 100% polyester and stank after one night. It rained every day. The locals were rude and restaurants were so expensive it made London look cheap and the food was worse than I can make (including you Rick Stein). I will never set foot in the dank hole again. And it cost thousands!

Cuba

Get?

Youthinkyoureuniqueyourejustastatistic · 18/05/2023 19:53

Milan although sometime in July/August when apparently while city shuts down and they go to the coast 🤣 nothing was open other than McDs at the train station and everywhere smelt like piss. It was only a 1 night stop over on way down to Moneglia so no problem really.

Doyouthinktheyknow · 18/05/2023 19:54

Lake Garda. Not Lake Garda’s fault, it was beautiful but eurocamp was beyond shit, it was incredibly hot and one of our dses did not cope at all with the heat or anything and basically had one long meltdown.

We came back after 2 days and I’ve never been so relieved to see grey skies🤣

I have a feeling my worst one might be coming up very soon. Off to rain-soaked Italy next week ...
And what makes it worse is that DD and her family are coming too, they've got limited time and funds, and it was my idea, so it'll be a wash-out and I'll spend the whole time feeling horribly guilty.

My mum came back from Italy today, it rained all week but she still had a really great time

Inthebathagain · 18/05/2023 20:00

Egypt.

I'd wanted to go for years. The kids had wanted to go for years. Went last year and toured with the now late teens.

As a single parent, it was blummin awful. We're very well travelled but I have never experienced horrid locals like these. All over the country. The amount of men who followed me, hassled me, chased me, swore at me. I shouted at 2 of them, as they made me feel so unsafe. Tourist hassle on a level I've never experienced before.

Add in 2 teens who had enough of the heat after a few days, so moaned and whinged round most of the sights they'd wanted to see for years, and ended up staying in the air con room instead of seeing major attractions. Got to the really expensive AI in Hurgarda after touring the country, chosen especially for them with a big water park, lots of pools and lots of teen fun. They stayed in the room 80% of the time on their phones.

So that was our last family holiday... I'm never returning to the country after that experience.

Skipton in a camper van

^

😂🕺

tracylamont13 · 18/05/2023 20:05

I didn't take to Paris at all. Thought it was overrated.

ZoeyBartlett · 18/05/2023 20:10

Glacier National Park and surrounds in US and Canada in an RV. Went with my H and parents. Mum was ill with thyroid issues and couldn't help cook or do anything and my Dad doesn't know how to. My H had stomach issues and arthritis in his thumb and couldn't help drive. Got an email 2 days before we left saying some of the campsites we had booked were closed due to forest fires. Got to Galcier and you could barely see anything due to the smoke and they started evacuating. Couldn't have fires (which my H and Dad love) due to fire risk.

Eventually headed up further into Canada to get away from smoke and were allowed fires - started raining. Then my Dad decided to help by cooking breakfast and spilt boiling oil all over his hand. Whilst he was running under a cold tap my H was outside the van crying about his stomach. I uttered the immortal words "shut the fuck up, man the fuck us and get back in the van so we can go to hospital".

Dad had hand in plastic bag for rest of trip. Finally made it back to Seattle and a lovely hotel. Got food poisoning at last dinner and spent night with one end or other on toilet.

Never been so pleased for a holiday to end.

Edinburgh.

Aplogies to Edinburgh MNers, but it was just so grey. Also it was colder than forecast and I didn’t have warm enough clothes, which is always a recipe foR misery, the Queen was in residence so I couldn’t visit Holyrood, and the streets in the New Town were all being dug up for the tram.

I was so happy to get out of town for a day trip to Linlithgow which was amazing.

JaneyGee · 18/05/2023 20:17

West coast of Ireland. Low grey sky, constant drizzle, depressing landscape, and nothing to do all day. Holiday was topped off by someone calling me a "f*ing English b**ch" when they heard my accent.

InglouriousBasterd · 18/05/2023 20:18

Jamaica - I was 13 and constantly harassed by men, couldn’t leave the hotel without security. It was AI and the tennis courts were over the road, somebody tried to drag me off when I stepped outside - luckily security and my older brother managed to hang on to me! Whole hotel got food poisoning.
