Breakfast in Manhattan

marilynmonroe · 17/05/2023 16:55

We are off to a family break with our 2 teenagers to Manhattan. I'm looking for a really great place to have our first breakfast. Somewhere that the kids will love as much as us. I guess something quite american etc. Can anyone recommend one? Thanks!

Tick Tock diner at the New Yorker (open 24 hours)
Westway diner (more local/authentic)
Ellens stardust diner (not great food wise but staff are Broadway wannabes so will entertain you). I haven’t personally been here.

Ellen's Stardust Diner on Times Square. Food is average and over priced (IMO) but the experience is brilliant.

God, not Ellen’s Stardust Diner! Having ‘Let It Go’ or ‘I Dreamed a Dream’ sung very loudly at you, Broadway-style, by waitstaff in no way compensates for the dubious hygiene and awful food. If you must eat there, I wouldn’t eat anything involving meat or eggs.

another vote for the tick tock diner

We had breakfast at the tick tock diner too (staying at the New Yorker) - in fact we had it there all three mornings! It was very good! Would've found somewhere else on days 2 and 3 if it wasn't. Not sure I would bother travelling there specifically though as I'm sure there must be other great places dotted around.

Pastis in the Meatpacking District is nice for brunch (French/New York bistro) close to the High Line.

Brooklyn Diner near to Central Park.

There are so many nice cafes and diners as you wander around.

Not breakfast options, but Burger Joint and Shake Shake snack are fun burger places.

LauraPausini · 17/05/2023 19:49

Sorry "Shake Shack" in Madison Square Park not Shake Snack!

The boathouse restaurant in Central Park (which is v expensive for dinner) serves good value breakfasts in a lovely location. Might be worth checking out for another day if it’s not what you want for the first morning.

Massive pancakes at Clinton St bakery

Sarabeths

scottys diner near the Chrysler building.

If you want something a bit different/ more authentic, get the 7 train to Court Square in Long Island City and go to the Court Square Diner. The subway only takes about 10 minutes from Midtown and it's elevated once you're in Queens which is cool. The diner is a proper retro one, aluminium style.

Where are you staying?

LauraPausini · 17/05/2023 21:21

A couple of other options - underneath Grand Central station there is a food hall with bakeries, coffee places for a casual breakfast. The station itself is great to see as it features in so many films!

Eataly (near the Flatiron building) also nice to visit for breakfast / lunch.

On our first morning we ate at https://www.carnegiediner.com/ which was delicious, huge portions, lots of variety and reasonable value. They also do unlimited coffee refills. We happened to walk past it on the way to Central Park as we were staying nearby. It was nice to then have a walk around the park as we were absolutely stuffed!

The Red Flame diner was good, and not massively touristy. Its just near Bryant Park, about 10mins walk from where you're staying.

That used to be my favourite place, but I think it's shut down now hasn't it?

Loved it here when I went a couple of years ago

My mistake, luckily, the Carnegie Diner Diner has not closed down! It's here: https://www.carnegiediner.com/central-park-new-york?utmsource=google&utmmmedium=gmb&utmcampaign=homepage&utmmterm=homepage-central
