What destinations are affordable when there?

If you disregard the cost of getting there, which destinations are reasonable when you are there for things like eating out, drinks, excursions?

It seems that that the £ doesn’t go very far at all these days. When I travelled more extensively in the 90s and early 00s most destinations seemed cheap compared to the UK. Now so many places seem expensive. Most recently I was in Fiji, and even pretty shit quality food was £30 a main course!

I’d like a destination with some history and some culture, and some good beaches/or swimming. Any suggestions?

We find Portugal cheaper than most other European countries.

Seville. Gorgeous city and so reasonable if you don’t go to super high end restaurants. We also found Malaga and Porto cheaper than we expected.

In recent years have discovered Spain and Portugal both pretty cheap, Rome cheaper than both.

Italy is pretty cheap. So is Spain.

Not all parts of Italy are actually. A lot of the tourist hotspots aren't.

Thailand is very cheap when there. Decent hotels from £50 a night, street food pad Thai £1. Beer £1.50. Been six times and love it more each time.

South Africa is very good value too.

Most of southern Europe is fairly reasonable as long as you don't go to a flashy resort. I recommend Sicily maybe, eating out was a bit cheaper than the U.K. wine much cheaper and fares reasonable to get there. Spain can be cheap ish just stay off the soft drinks Grin. Longer haul it varies a lot but India etc Dan be pretty reasonable but you need to be going to locals type places not tourist traps. Looking at a multi centre African holiday which is surprisingly expensive, what's worse is you know it's not going to local people so I'm trying to book directly with small local businesses rather than European based operators bar flights. Sri Lanka is also reasonable as long as you eat in locals places, the government controls hotel prices to an extent so 5 star is not expensive (a rarity) and you can go as low as £20 a night
