Who has been to the Bordeaux region?

Could Bordeaux be the holy grail of holiday destinations?

I like bougie places but do not have a bougie budget.
I like it hot.
I like beautiful countryside.
I like amazing food.
I have two boys aged 12 and 9.
Could this be what I have been looking for my whole life?!!

I have not been but my friend was talking about it. Has anyone been and have any recommendations?

Also do you fly or drive there?

TIA

We had a fab holiday there.
Flew to Bordeaux, spent a week on the coast (just south of Biscarosse - a great area), then a night in St Emillion, then a few days in the Dordogne area, then a couple of nights in Bordeaux.

There's loads to do in that area - the Dune du Pilat, watersports on the lake at Biscarosse, woods for cycling in all along the coast, castles galore (and more watersports) in the Dordogne... whatever kind of holiday you want, you'll be able to have it.

We drove from Eurotunnel. Took about 9 hours with stops. Easy to drive!

We fly in to Bordeaux or Bergerac and holiday there most years as a friend owns a house. We love it and spend most days river swimming, SUPing on lakes, just generally relaxing. We always go inland as it’s cheaper but the flights are usually very reasonable. Car hire can be a killer.

For hot, cheap and beautiful, I would say the Ardeche!
