Best place to go to in Crete

We are thinking of a holiday to Crete in the summer. Myself, dh and our twin dd's (15yo). They are not party animals at all and we love exploring islands, eating out and spending time together. Having never been to Crete before, I was wondering if the Chania resort would be suitable. It certainly looks lovely. Anyone been there? Or anywhere else in Crete for that matter! Any helpful hints? many thanks

Elounda is quite a sophisticated resort in the north east coast. It’s set sound a small fishing harbour, you can do days trips out, eg to that former leper colony. It’s quite low key and very pretty. It’s about an hour from Heraklion.

I love chania, its one of my favourite places. The waterfront and old town are beautiful. Could sit outside eating and drinking and people watching all day there. There's some good museums there too.

We've stayed in Elounda and Sissi both nice, quiet, nice restaurants etc. Hired a car both times there's so much to see in Crete and the driving is easy

Chania is absolutely gorgeous, great mix of 'city'/beaches/places to explore. We normally stay just west of Chania near Agii apostoli which is about 15 minutes by bus to Chania centre and then hire a car to do trips further afield.

As with most of Greece the food and people are incredible but Chania definitely has a special place in my heart!

@LittleFreakJezebel we're going to Crete in August, staying about 30 mins from chania. So happy to hear it's great!

How easy is it to get around on the buses?

LittleFreakJezebel · 07/05/2023 04:58

@Amboseli really easy, the only funny thing is how you get your tickets depends on where you are getting on. If your bus stop is near a shop that sells tickets you have to buy them from the shop, but if you are getting on at a quieter stop you can buy them on the bus! Then getting back on in Chania is fine as there are ticket booths at both the main route start points (with very helpful staff who speak perfect English).

If you are near a shop then tickets are just a single price for the zone you are in and work both east/west bound, so you can buy lots of tickets at once to stop you needing to buy them multiple times.

@LittleFreakJezebel thank you! Can't wait! Looks like there are so many amazing restaurants to try and the beaches look gorgeous.

Chania is really nice - I much prefer the west side of the island to the east. The clubbing crowd head to the resorts east of Iraklion, which IMO are to be avoided. I'm sure you'll have a lovely time (although the last time I went to Crete was in the 90s!)
