Hi all

After an exceptionally tough year, heakth wise, financially ee are incredibly lucky that my mother has booked a villa in algarve for last week in July for us (Dh, 2 children 10 & 13, mum and me,). Looking at map it is in an area called Gale just up the road from Popular Villas offices.

Has anyone stayed in that area? Could we get to supermarket, restaurant beach etc without a car? We have a pool so hoping weather will be good as children are happy to be in pool, so means minimal spending for us.

Any tips would be great.

We stayed in a villa in Gale last year. There are a few nice beaches that are walking distance. Gale beach itself is nice and Salgados is a little walk but well worth it and part of the walk is through a nature reserve on a board walk so nice views. There are a few bars and restaurants, in particular I remember a nice Italian but it’s not like a holiday resort with a strip so just be prepared for the restaurants to be a bit spaced out rather than all in one spot as it’s quite residential but we’re used to this so didn’t bother us at all.
we didn’t eat out every night as we had a bbq at the villa but we ate out an indian, Chinese and Italian and also got takeaways from them.
There is also a couple of supermarkets that are walking distance. We didn’t hire a car and got about just fine. We got a taxi into Albufeira old town a few times which is really nice and cheap in a taxi, lots to do down on the marina for kids and a nice little tourist train that DS loved. Loads and loads of bars and restaurants if you’re looking for more going on (avoid Albufeira strip in the new town at all costs though!).

Also we found a great quirky restaurant near the end of our holiday called cafe scenarium, it doesn’t look like much outside but it’s really nice inside and perfect for a date night with DH. We told DS who was two at the time and they were great with him. I was gutted we found it at the end and couldn’t go again!

Hi, we have stayed near gale 4 times as friends had a villa there. There are 3 great beaches very nearby (gale, evaristo and castelo) all of which have beach bars and restaurants where you can watch the sun set and all of which are lovely fine sand and clear waters.
We have hired a car each time but only for day trips to albufeira - as pp said the old town is pretty nice with lots of stuff going on, street performers, market stalls, restaurants etc. and the marina too is worth a visit. Both are 5-10 mins in a car. However if you just want a beach and pool holiday, you won't need to leave gale. We love it there - my friends family sold the villa and I was raging at her! Grin
