Really need some ideas for 5 nights away during the May 1/2 term - (not taking DCs - so want to avoid places with other peoples DCs) - is there anywhere in Europe that would be low season then?

Not been out of U.K. for 4 loooong years.

Don’t want a hectic city break. Would like coastal / lake but not really too resorty. Might hire a car to mooch about - but just really need some rest, peace, quiet after a few v tough years.

Also needs to be reasonable flight and accommodation costs. So looking for ideas for quiet cultural / authentic destinations where would know we were abroad.

Also what websites would you use for a package deal - or is it best to do it all yourself?

We are going to Crete for the first time this summer and it looks so lovely and interesting. Lots of interesting little towns to stay in and other parts of the island to explore if you’re in the mood. Also doesn’t look like it’s just resorts though someone else may correct me!

Fly to Athens and take a ferry in to one of the Saronic Islands like Aegina. The sea will probably still be a bit cool but it would be a nice place to mooch around and you could do a day trip to Athens or to the Peloponnese, eg the theatre at Epidaurus. Alternatively, fly to Athens, hire a car and drive across the Corinth canal and down to Nafplio in the Peloponnese. It’s a pretty little, quite Italianate town and a good base for eg Mycenae if you fancy. Greece is lovely in the Spring.

Monte de Bravura in Portugal is authentic, adult only, away from it all and not too expensive. It’s 10 minutes drive from some lovely beaches. No spa, but you can get massages.
My other two recommendations would be The Magnolia in Kefalonia and Tamarix del Mar Suites in Santorini.
