Powys

We are going on a short break soon near Powys. I have had a bit of a google but can't find much nearby to do. We have done Powys castle previously and the Welshpool light railway. We are going with older children and enjoy castles, museums, manor houses, animal farms etc. Not really into walking. Does anyone have any ideas within about an hour of Powys? Thanks😊

Which part of Powys are you staying in? In Herefordshire there are lots of nice National Trust places and some castles and lovely towns, Ross in Wye, Leominster, Bromyard, Ledbury, Monmouth, Ludlow. All close to Powys but depends on where you are staying as to whether they are an hour away.

Powys is big, and the roads are not fast. Where exactly are you staying, so we can narrow it down to 'within an hour away'?

Thank you for the replies so far. We are staying in Montgomery

Powys has beautiful empty scenery with mountains and reservoirs but not many attractions. Hafren forest has lovely waymarked walks including one to the source of the Severn . There is a car park and toilets but no other facilities. Elan valley is beautiful with walks and cycling round the dams nice lunch at pen y bony tea shop and a visitor centre below the bottom dam.

You have Shrewsbury.

NoSquirrels · 02/05/2023 19:10

Really you’re looking more towards north Shropshire, then - Shrewsbury, Ludlow, Hawkstone Follies, the Long Mynd.

What kind of thing do you like & what ages/stages are you trying to please?

Heavensalongwayaway · 02/05/2023 19:11

If you’re in Montgomery then you have Shrewsbury and also the Welsh border for example Chirk Castle, Wrexham and Llangollen.

Sorry - see you already answered my questions in the OP!

older children and enjoy castles, museums, manor houses, animal farms etc

So, Ludlow (castle, nice town, often lots on), Shrewsbury (museums etc), Hawkstone Follies (country park with ruins), Croft Castle & Berrington Hall (NT, right next to each other so do both), red kite feeding at Rhayader, dragon boats at Llandrindod, Silver Mountain Experience then on to the coast at Aberystwyth…

Corris craft centre...King Arthur's experience. And there's a gin distillery 😀
Beautiful beach at Aberdyfi

Thank you all so much ! There are some fantastic suggestions there. Far more than I came up with when googling. We will definitely use some of these. Will wait to see what the weather will be then make an itinerary!
