How much would you expect to pay for cheap flights to EU city in July?

Maybe I'm out of touch but I'm looking at easy jet/Ryanair flights to EU capital cites for end July or early Aug... blimey! Not only are the flights at 05:45 from an airport one hour out of the centre but they're £300 each!

Has the era of cheap flights now disappeared?

Having just booked flights to the south of France for September, I am going to say yes! We tried a bunch of different airports and we even had a bit of flexibility on dates, and as you said, anything with a decent flight time was ridiculously priced and even the early and late flights were more expensive than I ever remembered before. It's really not surprising, though, with the increased cost of fuel, staffing costs, and everything else.

I think for capital cities/tourist places during peak season then yes it can be expensive, especially when you add on any bags or whatever.

I booked Easyjet to Vienna for £60 and Munich with BA for £62. Both mid August.
I booked a long time ago though.

We booked Ryanair (they were cheaper than easyjet and jet2) to Tenerife in September about 10 months in advance and it was £300 each with hold luggage. I’ve never managed to bag a cheap flights bargain and I think if you do you need to be prepared to fly at really odd times or days, not add any extras, and book as soon as flights go on sale.

Flights are certainly very expensive although you see the odd bargain here and there.

I have noticed that Ryanair haven't released many winter flights. I wonder why that is?

Try different airports

I can fly from Liverpool Manchester or Birmingham - the same holiday can be £££ based on the same dates same hotel.

Worth a night in a hotel the night before.

We've got flights to Crete in August for 250pp. Outbound departure 1625 inbound 2305. Booked a few days ago. No hold luggage.

I don't think that's too bad for August and not booked well in advance.

Realise this is from April but how did you manage without hold luggage? Top tips greatly received!

Will need to look at cheap flights to Spain soon for DS (destination to be confirmed) had a little nosey at fares for the end of July! Certainly not getting a cheap flight once baggage fees have been added etc

Bjorkdidit · 13/06/2024 18:58

You're not looking at Paris or surrounding area are you, so added Olympics tax are you?

There are bargains to be had if you can be flexible with dates or location. I've been looking over last few days and there's loads of flights to places that would make a good city break for well under £100 pp return.

Jet2, and probably BA, include both large and small cabin bags in the base price so adequate for a week in a hot country.

HandaFae · 13/06/2024 19:02

Late July, school holidays - £300-£400 return, sadly.

MissingMoominMamma · 13/06/2024 19:05

I’ve just booked for Stockholm. It would’ve been £300+ return from Manchester, so I looked at Liverpool, which came up as £90. In reality it was £140, with an extra cabin bag, but still much cheaper.

Have you looked at different airports?

That’s a great saving! I haven’t looked at different airports yet, just Manchester but once I know the destination airport (hopefully find out tonight) I’ll definitely compare.

Also, be a bit flexible with dates. I’m flying on a Tuesday because it’s cheaper.
