How to afford a holiday? I feel a bit desperate.

Apologies if this is long.

Holidays in our family are nearly always camping and we've spent a lot of time in Devon for example. We've also seen quite a bit of Scotland. However, because DH is a police officer and never, ever gets any time off in summer, it's usually me taking the children away while he carries on working and him joining us on rest days. He also uses a lot of his leave to take his army cadets away (we live in a socially deprived area and are very short of adult volunteers for anything and as he points out to me, if he didn't take them away, the detriment would be to already disadvantaged children). DH is a police officer of the best part of two decades and I teach part time so we can and do take the children to the things they enjoy like theatre, museums, galleries, local events, festivals etc and they have hobbies. They certainly don't miss out but we've never had big family holidays.

This year, my parents invited us to a long weekend at Center Parcs a few weeks ago and due to how DH's rest days fell, we booked 3 nights in an Airbnb in Northumberland over Easter. Those were our holidays this year. Sadly, DH had a nasty accident on day one of CP and ended up in quite unwell in hospital. He needed surgery once he'd recovered from the initial injuries, sod's law saw the surgery scheduled on day 2 of us going to Northumberland. So the DC went to grandparents for a few days and I took DH to a specialist hospital miles away for surgery. The Easter holidays were a wash out and we didn't even manage a day out as a family as DH's recovery and ongoing concussion meant he wasn't well at all.

DH's work have - for the first time in his entire career - found a way to give him time off in summer in recognition of things being a bit crap right now. He is on light duties for another 4 weeks and needs more x-rays to make sure he's put back together/holding together properly. He has his normal 4 rest days and 6 whole days after that. 10 days off together in summer! That never happens. We talked about it and thought maybe we could go abroad for a week. DD is mid GCSEs, DS is doing SATs and it seems like a landmark summer. It's been a tough year in myriad ways. I got a bit excited/carried away and ordered passports. We talked about it with the children, they both said Amsterdam was somewhere they wanted to see. Me too.

I've tried my hardest to make it work. I've tried looking at package deals, booking things separately, ferries rather than flights, trains rather than ferries. I can't find any way of affording it. I knew summer holiday breaks are expensive but I'm flabbergasted.

I'm trying to make it work in my head. I considered camping via Eurocamp or similar but we've camped. We always camp. We're campers. The children want to do something else and if I'm honest, me too. I take them away myself every summer and I usually don't mind the whole putting up tents in the rain, beans over a stove, making it fun stuff. I've done it for years. But part of me does wonder what it's like not to sweep the groundsheet each morning and to have to walk to the toilet block in wellies at 6am. And I do love all that stuff. When talking to DD's friends about their trips to Costa Rica or Spain or Disney or whatever, I've never felt a single pang of envy. But right now, I'm feeling so miserable.

DD is doing French GCSE and her answer to the oral q about holidays is a very honest "we camp and my Mum works really hard, it's always an adventure and I used to love it but it's become repetitive and I'd like to see the world when I'm older". I know it's an effort to use lots of tenses(!), but there is probably some truth in there. Definitely some truth in there. I know it.

So do we stay in the UK? I thought about staying somewhere really nice but tbh, we tend to only use accommodation as a base so what about some amazing days out. I asked DD this morning and she said "what about Ireland?" Probably a good suggestion actually. Or Wales maybe but I'm aware I want to go there because of the mining museum and I'm trying to make it special for the children. Trouble is, one likes art, history and galleries and the other likes anything naff, ride-based or celluloid.

Can anybody suggest anything? Location? Anywhere considered. Ways to cut costs? What works for you? Should I scrimp on accommodation and spend on days out?

I don't like hotels really as eating out is always so expensive and we like to cook/watch a film in an evening. Self catering preferred.

Is there a brilliant holiday for two 40 somethings, a 16yo girl and 11yo boy that we can actually afford? Has anybody ever put a holiday on a credit card?

If it's all just pie in the sky, I'll forget about it entirely but I'm ill in bed with Covid and feeling glum and wishing I could book just a week away with my family who've had a challenging year in so many ways.

Budget? I don't know. We usually book a £25 per night camping pitch. Everything in Amsterdam was coming in at 3k for just flights and accommodation. Under 2k, we could probably borrow from savings and cut right back to afford it but I don't think that buys a week abroad does it?

I feel a bit of a failure that at this point in my life, I can't afford a week's holiday for us but at the same time, feel like an ungrateful wazzock because holidays are a luxury and we could afford to camp for a week somewhere quite easily but we are wanting to do more and that feels ridiculous and silly and the sadness is pathetic isn't it? It's probably the Covid talking.

You should Definitely be able to do it under budget by driving and getting the Dover dunkirk ferry (harwich much more expensive) and staying in a hostel, maybe outside Amsterdam on a train line, like a commuter town. We do most holidays driving because it’s cheaper than buying 4 individual tickets. We did Efteling in the summer staying there for a week and Amsterdam for under 1k, so it must be your flights pushing the prices up so much.

ShowOfHands · 29/04/2023 13:16

I'm so glad I asked. I haven't had a passport for 20 years and have never been abroad without going with family as a teenager so don't even know where to start. I was trying to find flights out of Norwich which were coming back as ££££ and then accommodation on top of that or packages via Google which leads to Tui for example and I've no idea if that's expensive or recommended. Usually, I pick up the phone and speak to a campsite, load the roof box and go. I know there are better ways of doing it, hence asking.

DH has off from July 26th for 10 days.

If your nearest airport is Norwich then you can't be too far from Harwich. 1st to 10th august ferry to hook of Holland including your car is £400.

You could visit Amsterdam for DD, Duinrell for DS, The Hague, Rotterdam. Just book cheap accommodation and travel around

This!

But also - does everyone else have passports? If none of you do, that’s going to add to costs.

KickboxingWanker · 29/04/2023 13:23

Check out sky scanner - put in a country you are interested in and search whole month you want to go.

We just found flights to Paris in August to Paris Beauvais airport for £168 return for 2 adults and 1 child.
We are hiring a car and spending 3 nights at Disneyland - booked direct. - expensive but you could stay anywhere and you don’t have to do Disney.
Then I’m either looking at at 4 nights in a farm cottage type Airbnb or 4 nights or a eurocamp type place - undecided.
then we’ll drive back to the airport - we’ll make sure the last lot of accommodation is no more than an hour from the airport.

Isyesterdaytomorrowtoday · 29/04/2023 13:23

Altomincio eurocamp (think it’s owned by a different company but very similar) is brill- close to gardaland for your DS and you can fly to Milan or Verona so lots of flight options

defi · 29/04/2023 13:24

Check out hostels. You can book private rooms and not dorms.

neonleopard · 29/04/2023 13:24

Have you looked at the European centre parks? I'm sure there is one driving distance of Amsterdam. Ferry/tunnel plus driving should be fairly affordable, and accomodation is much cheaper than the UK ones. My sister and her DH are in the police and they were often granted authorised term time off for their kids, could you go away in early September instead or early July ??

CatOnTheChair · 29/04/2023 13:26

I'd also look at Stansted or East Midlands Airports (depending on where in EA you are). You may well find cheaper flights, freeing up cash for the accomadation.

We had a wonderful week in Amsterdam. It sounds like it would meet your daghters interests!
We did flights, then booked accomadation separately through booking dot com.

Lots of experience with the police force here, specialist armed units and all sorts. He can take leave in the summer, he'll just be choosing not to and allowing others strong arm their way into getting it because it's easier for him to hang around where he can do his cadets stuff and you'll just accept it. It's really not fair of him.

2K is your max? He's on top whack, you're a teacher and you live frugally? There should be more in the budget, I'd be looking closely at that!

In answer to your question though, flights from Manchester to billund early august for a week are less than £200 for the 4 of you with Ryanair. There's a choice of camping and cabin sites or b&bs in the area from £500 for the week in hotels. Com. Legoland, lalandia both local and plenty of museums and the sculpture park and nice villages to wander.

He cannot take holiday in the summer usually.

And top whack? Hmm. His salary is good, yes, but I'm wondering what you imagine it is? And 15% on pension, life insurance, federation fees etc, a lot is swallowed up and as I mentioned previously, we made the decision to prioritise the house and we had to replace the roof entirely and take down a dangerous extension. I know where the money goes.

I'm not paid as a teacher btw, I'm an instructor as I'm not qualified to teach under 16 and 3 days a week, I'm a cover supervisor. I'm not on the same as a qualified teacher because I haven't had the time or money to retrain. I'll be doing so in 2024 I hope.

I felt okay at the beginning of the thread, just a bit sad and demoralised after a rough time. Now I feel like I'm trying to defend my life to a perfect stranger and tearful and useless. Again, it's the Covid. I don't know what you're implying re where our money is actually going.

I've acknowledged that I'm not flat broke. We have English Heritage and National Trust memberships, museum memberships etc. We have a really lovely life on a week to week basis. No credit, no debt beyond a mortgage but we don't have a lot of savings and those we do are in 10yr plans and not due to mature yet. Small contingency fund but DH's car has cost us 1.6k in the last 6 months and it was wiped out quite quickly.

DH is a good man. He was seriously unwell a few weeks ago. I don't know that I am in a place to hear him called unfair or selfish.

I'm sorry to take a post so badly but really, not the time or place.

Ok, so based on your dates you can take the car from Harwich and stay at one of the Europarcs outside Amsterdam. The second one is near a train station if you didn't want to drive in but if you did it's only 25 mins. It's 45 mins to Duinrell and The Hague. There's so much to do and you get the entire apartment. There's also pool, sauna, spa, parks etc on site

The whole cost would be £1300. Taking the car means you can take things for packed lunches and a few meals with you

PinkFootstool · 29/04/2023 13:31

Looking at TUI from Stansted you could do 4 nights in Amsterdam for £1600ish - lots of options of places to stay around that price flying from there.

Or a week in Kefalonia for £2500 ish.

TUI is definitely worth a look, as is Jet2 and Easyjet holidays - they all work in much the same way, and if you have transport picking you up and dropping you off between airport and accommodation is pretty stress free.

Ionacat · 29/04/2023 13:32

VacanceSelect has a week at Duinrell for £1700 and ferry from Harwich is around £400 for your dates - take the car. Duinrell has a free theme park if you stay for your youngest and you are close to The Hague, Amsterdam, Leiden and Rotterdam for day trips out. That’s a two bed mobile home, you are within walking distance (around 10 minutes from the town centre where there’s a supermarket, restaurants and shops.)
There are other parks around, but given what you’ve said that would be ideal. We don’t go abroad often, but save up for it.

I didn't even know that was an option!

I'm in Norfolk.

This could help massively.

Sorry, just seen your reply to my post about his leave. Maybe I misread, but I thought you were a teacher and husband had been in the police for a couple of decades. He'd be on top whack by then, I know the pay scales and how the building of the shift patterns works. Annual leave and non-effectives must be built in to all police shift patterns. It's ducking hard to get leave at popular times and many officers will just let the strong armers take it every year. That's all I was saying.

Didn't mean to upset you but it really sounded like you needed a break and if you can only take leave in the holidays that's a good enough reason for him to push for the leave in the holidays. As it turns out he's got it this year (which means it is built in to the pattern so available). Was just trying to help.

Had really lovely break in Northern Ireland in Belfast and up causeway coast. However I recommended it to former police officer friend and he was not comfortable with going there, something I hadn't considered. I don't know, I found it so wonderful and the people were brilliant and friendly.

DH's best friend got married in Northern Ireland and DH was initially refused the time off because of the location/perceived risk. He almost didn't get to go.

You both have secure jobs , book the holiday on a interest free credit card , sounds like you all need it

SingAlongAndItMightJustGetYouThrough · 29/04/2023 13:39

"I don't know what you're implying re where our money is actually going."

I wasn't implying anything, nor did I know about your roof. There are many many spouses of police officers that wouldn't know the workings of it all because, frankly, they don't often like to get into the job when they're at home. I was off searching for holidays for you! And screenshotting them in the hope you'd get a break. Ffs. Hope you have a nice trip.

Pralineandcoffee · 29/04/2023 13:45

@ShowOfHands ahh ignore my Belfast suggestion I forgot dh was a police officer and the implications of that on Northern Ireland!

Eurocamp duinrell has a theme park onsite and big caravans. Eurotunnel is about 250 return. A week might be more in august but if you go after gcses before mid July could be about 1k for a good caravan. You could drive to Amsterdam for the day.

Yes, Duinrell is amazing. You can book it direct through the park website or through sites like Eurocamp. Stay in the static caravans if you don't want to campo, they're really nice.
Ámsterdam is an easy day trip. Rotterdam has a great zoo and isn't far. Leiden and Delft are near.
Duinrell rents bikes and the beach is a couple of kms away.

Croissantsandpistachio · 29/04/2023 13:52

We were in Munich earlier this year and I thought it would be fab for a summer holiday. Loads of museums and galleries, huge number of outside pools and a massive water park (possibly the biggest in Europe) and also lots of history nearby. Dachau and Nuremberg are a short train ride away, which would be very interesting for a teen history buff. Hotel Augustin is great for families with a massive breakfast buffet- it's sort of half hotel half hostel. I've just had a look and hotels are reasonable in the summer presumably because Germans go to the coast and mountains.

OrangeBlossomsinthesun · 29/04/2023 13:52

How about Northern Spain? Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria.

I'm going back to bed for a bit. Covid is a complete misery.

Thank you so, so much for all the help so far.

I'm going to do a bit more research later and look at all suggestions on here.

I am so grateful, just feeling like rubbish and need to sleep.
