How to afford a holiday? I feel a bit desperate.

Apologies if this is long.

Holidays in our family are nearly always camping and we've spent a lot of time in Devon for example. We've also seen quite a bit of Scotland. However, because DH is a police officer and never, ever gets any time off in summer, it's usually me taking the children away while he carries on working and him joining us on rest days. He also uses a lot of his leave to take his army cadets away (we live in a socially deprived area and are very short of adult volunteers for anything and as he points out to me, if he didn't take them away, the detriment would be to already disadvantaged children). DH is a police officer of the best part of two decades and I teach part time so we can and do take the children to the things they enjoy like theatre, museums, galleries, local events, festivals etc and they have hobbies. They certainly don't miss out but we've never had big family holidays.

This year, my parents invited us to a long weekend at Center Parcs a few weeks ago and due to how DH's rest days fell, we booked 3 nights in an Airbnb in Northumberland over Easter. Those were our holidays this year. Sadly, DH had a nasty accident on day one of CP and ended up in quite unwell in hospital. He needed surgery once he'd recovered from the initial injuries, sod's law saw the surgery scheduled on day 2 of us going to Northumberland. So the DC went to grandparents for a few days and I took DH to a specialist hospital miles away for surgery. The Easter holidays were a wash out and we didn't even manage a day out as a family as DH's recovery and ongoing concussion meant he wasn't well at all.

DH's work have - for the first time in his entire career - found a way to give him time off in summer in recognition of things being a bit crap right now. He is on light duties for another 4 weeks and needs more x-rays to make sure he's put back together/holding together properly. He has his normal 4 rest days and 6 whole days after that. 10 days off together in summer! That never happens. We talked about it and thought maybe we could go abroad for a week. DD is mid GCSEs, DS is doing SATs and it seems like a landmark summer. It's been a tough year in myriad ways. I got a bit excited/carried away and ordered passports. We talked about it with the children, they both said Amsterdam was somewhere they wanted to see. Me too.

I've tried my hardest to make it work. I've tried looking at package deals, booking things separately, ferries rather than flights, trains rather than ferries. I can't find any way of affording it. I knew summer holiday breaks are expensive but I'm flabbergasted.

I'm trying to make it work in my head. I considered camping via Eurocamp or similar but we've camped. We always camp. We're campers. The children want to do something else and if I'm honest, me too. I take them away myself every summer and I usually don't mind the whole putting up tents in the rain, beans over a stove, making it fun stuff. I've done it for years. But part of me does wonder what it's like not to sweep the groundsheet each morning and to have to walk to the toilet block in wellies at 6am. And I do love all that stuff. When talking to DD's friends about their trips to Costa Rica or Spain or Disney or whatever, I've never felt a single pang of envy. But right now, I'm feeling so miserable.

DD is doing French GCSE and her answer to the oral q about holidays is a very honest "we camp and my Mum works really hard, it's always an adventure and I used to love it but it's become repetitive and I'd like to see the world when I'm older". I know it's an effort to use lots of tenses(!), but there is probably some truth in there. Definitely some truth in there. I know it.

So do we stay in the UK? I thought about staying somewhere really nice but tbh, we tend to only use accommodation as a base so what about some amazing days out. I asked DD this morning and she said "what about Ireland?" Probably a good suggestion actually. Or Wales maybe but I'm aware I want to go there because of the mining museum and I'm trying to make it special for the children. Trouble is, one likes art, history and galleries and the other likes anything naff, ride-based or celluloid.

Can anybody suggest anything? Location? Anywhere considered. Ways to cut costs? What works for you? Should I scrimp on accommodation and spend on days out?

I don't like hotels really as eating out is always so expensive and we like to cook/watch a film in an evening. Self catering preferred.

Is there a brilliant holiday for two 40 somethings, a 16yo girl and 11yo boy that we can actually afford? Has anybody ever put a holiday on a credit card?

If it's all just pie in the sky, I'll forget about it entirely but I'm ill in bed with Covid and feeling glum and wishing I could book just a week away with my family who've had a challenging year in so many ways.

Budget? I don't know. We usually book a £25 per night camping pitch. Everything in Amsterdam was coming in at 3k for just flights and accommodation. Under 2k, we could probably borrow from savings and cut right back to afford it but I don't think that buys a week abroad does it?

I feel a bit of a failure that at this point in my life, I can't afford a week's holiday for us but at the same time, feel like an ungrateful wazzock because holidays are a luxury and we could afford to camp for a week somewhere quite easily but we are wanting to do more and that feels ridiculous and silly and the sadness is pathetic isn't it? It's probably the Covid talking.

Di you drive? We have done Landal Greenparcs many times. Het Vennebos is just over rye Dutch border. We have done daytrips to Amsterdam bt driving to the nearest station. Also done Antwerp and bits of Germany from the same place

PinkFootstool · 29/04/2023 12:35

Can you post your exact dates? And approx potential start points ie Harwich ferry, London City / Bristol / Manchester Airport etc. That makes it easier to help look.

Has he asked his Police Federation about access to the welfare holiday scheme? In Hampshire they have access to a Fed owned caravan at Sandy Balls and can be given a free family holiday for recuperation / recovery / mental health / family needs ie sick kids etc or book it for cheap when it's not needed for welfare breaks.

Laney79 · 29/04/2023 12:40

Where do you shop? Sometimes the reward partners for Tesco/sainsburys mean you can get cheap travel or hotels? Tesco are currently offering 3x value of the voucher (no good for you guys but I got a Butlins break for £50 vouchers and £12 cash) but that drops to 2x value in June.

Ditto check any credit card loyalty's you have-do you have any forgotten about airmiles or similar?

You could also manage to up your budget a bit by switching your bank account-some offer £100-£200 just to switch to them so that could help a little.

And finally if you do book a package or use a big company sign up for newsletters and Google voucher codes-there will often be small incentives or money off knocking about (for instance I did a jet2 competition and didn't win but got a code for £60 off)

Ryanair website shows the price of each flight on different days so you can pick the cheapest. I’ve just booked Sunday to Thursday in august to Porto. Then it’s only 4 nights accommodation. Trivago is pretty good I find. It was £700 for 3 of us for flights and an apartment.
We’ve got the tiny cabin bags so no extra charge there.
I plan on doing a mix of self catering and eating out. And lots of free activities. Kids are teen and almost teen.

MuddyMay · 29/04/2023 12:45

Yes, I would put an important holiday such as this on a credit card, as long as I had a solid plan to pay it off. It sounds like you are very organised and so this would be no problem.

I’ve read all your posts. What a time of it your family have had over the past year or so. I would make Amsterdam happen. The great thing is that once you are there is can be quite cheap in terms of eating etc so you don’t have to spend a fortune. Make it happen for your daughter, but also for you and the rest of your family. It sounds like it’s just what is needed. 💛

Sallycantwaitnoel · 29/04/2023 12:45

Go to Centreparks in the Netherlands. Ryanair to Eindhoven, taxi to De Kempervennen or one of the other resorts. Can usually get a week for €1500 and flight for £100pp.

She does have hEDS. Well recognised! It's making her GCSEs quite tough. Two day art exam last week and her wrists are so swollen still. I am dreading the long run of exams, particularly as all of her extra options (History, RS, French) involve so much writing on top of the core subjects. She has 27 exams to go. Thankfully, she has a laptop but her knuckles swell after about an hour and weirdly, she then comes out in hives. It's all so hard.

We're in GCSE's too! Had to drop to 3 but still worrying about the physical impact of two papers on one day... Can I PM you? It's all new to us and struggling to get support

TweedPillow · 29/04/2023 12:46

I had a great holiday in Normandy, went by car ferry and then went to beaches, museums, war graveyards, saw the Bayeux Tapestry and went to Mon San Michael.

Roserunner · 29/04/2023 12:50

It depends on your dates but seascanner have some brilliant deals on cruises at the moment. I just looked at a Spain/France one with MSc and priced it up for 2 adults and a teen at £2150 all inclusive inc premium drink package and their most expensive balcony room. Tips are included and adding an extra child would only add about £100 on if you're all in the same room. If you choose a different cabin and don't have the alcohol package it would easily be under £2000.

Patchworksack · 29/04/2023 12:50

Haven’t read the whole thread but second the suggestion of Duinrell. It has plenty of water slides and rides for younger one, easy day trip/s to Amsterdam, nice beach a cycle ride away, we also loved Madurodam and Leiden.

literalviolence · 29/04/2023 12:52

I found return flights from luton to amsterdam on easyjet, 12th to 19th August for £612. This is with no seat choice and only 2 hold bags between you - that's how we keep the cost down for flights. Then a studio near the beach in Pension Zandvoort aan Zee (Zandvoort beach, about 30km from Amsterdam) for £1192. Self catering cos that's usually much better value. It's small but as you say, it's a base and there is a terrace to enjoy. £1804 in total. We found public transport in Netherlands to be great, so you might not need to hire a car. On occasion we have booked a seat in a bus going to the resorts and just hired a car for a couple of days to explore the places less accessible by public transport. Definitely doable! Enjoy! and pm me if you want any more info about those deals or anything else. We had to do hols all in (spending, car parking at airport, insurance) for 2k when money was tighter so we've had practise at cutting costs down. It just takes more planning and didn't really impact on the holiday.

literalviolence · 29/04/2023 12:53

Sorry, meant to say Pension Zandvoort aan Zee deal is on booking.com

literalviolence · 29/04/2023 12:54

And if you create an account, the costs on Pension Zandvoort aan Zee goes down to £1079. Might be because I've booked before, but some sites it is worth being a member.

Mnusernc · 29/04/2023 12:54

Denmark. Fly to Billund, it's really cheap then air bnb.

alyceflowers · 29/04/2023 12:55

I'd definitely just put it on a credit card and pay it off over the following year! Life is for living!

I usually book an expensive holiday 12-18 months in advance, put a deposit down and pay it off in installments.

QuickNameChangeForMeToday · 29/04/2023 12:59

I am known as the family travel agent - I’m absolutely not a travel agent but I am great at finding a holiday.

@ShowOfHands budget upto 2k.

2 Adults, how many DC and ages?
Norwich closest airport?
Exact dates?

MarinatemysoulinSprite · 29/04/2023 13:02

Sorry, just realised that I posted a random link with no context!

Holiday homes and apartments rented by members of the police.

It's a private group so your DH would need to apply to join.

Norwich to amsterdam on these dates on KLM with 4 checked bags is £889. Still coming in under 2k.

TheChosenTwo · 29/04/2023 13:07

Last year we were in a passport predicament and decided not to risk sending two of them off as one of our dc ended up missing a holiday her passport took 15 weeks to
come back.
so we went to Northern Ireland and stayed in a really gorgeous little air bnb, if you pm me I’m happy to give you more info (it’s not my air bnb 🤣). Took ds11 and dds who were 16 and 18 at the time. Really loved it, something a bit different for us and it was a stunningly beautiful view we woke up to every day. And the weather was glorious!

Pbubz · 29/04/2023 13:08

Amsterdam is just so expensive now, you can definitely go to other places for cheaper and possibly a bit longer. Agree with other poster about possibly looking somewhere off the beaten path. Solvenia is amazing, lubijana is a fantastic city for day trips!

Pralineandcoffee · 29/04/2023 13:09

I haven't read the whole thread but what about Northern Ireland? Belfast is a great city, lots going on and there are good routes to Derry and Giants Causeway. It's cheaper than Dublin and the south for accommodation.

Had really lovely break in Northern Ireland in Belfast and up causeway coast. However I recommended it to former police officer friend and he was not comfortable with going there, something I hadn't considered. I don't know, I found it so wonderful and the people were brilliant and friendly.

Lisbeth50 · 29/04/2023 13:16

Eurocamp is nothing like camping in a tent and cooking beans over a stove. You stay in a mobile home for a start.

Definitely look at Duinrell. Fantastic park with its own theme park and water park. Really easy to visit Amsterdam. Booking direct is usually best but it may be fully booked this late. Booking via Eurocamp is quite expensive but Canvas Holidays is much cheaper and quite similar. You could also cut the number of nights to 6 instead of 7 to cut costs.

Both Eurocamp and Canvas have many other parks in the Netherlands and Northern France for less cost than Duinrell.
