Just as the title says really! Anyone been to either Lefkada or Meganisi? Thinking of a week in each over summer. Thanks.

Yes, I've been to both. Very lovely.

Meganisi really is like the 'old ' Greece of 20years ago. We atayed in Katomeri which is easy walking to a few beaches and to Vathi which is a coastal village with lots of bars and restaurants but lovely and quiet. Fanari beach is beautiful with very clear water. You can hire boats which is great fun.

Thanks! Would you say a week was long enough in Meganisi? We’ve got the option of 2 weeks there or one week there and one in Lefkada. Me, DH, DS 19 and DD16 who are also holidaying with friends at other points so they’ll be happy just to chill with us.

I’ve been to Lefkada and was really underwhelmed. In fact it was probably one of my least favourite places / holidays. I don’t know if that’s more to do with the actual place or the fact I went with ex dh who badgered me into hiring bikes and cycling for miles all over the place which really isn’t my thing. Before that I’d been to Dassia in Corfu and Kefalonia so I think I was expecting something as beautiful as that and I was really disappointed 🙈

AvonCallingBarksdale · 29/04/2023 11:25

@Xrays that’s interesting, shame you didn’t enjoy it. Lefkada is the one I’m least sure about tbh.

I loved Meganisi, but it was about 20 years ago!

It's tiny, so if you're looking for 'sights' there wasn't a great deal. But it's just lovely and quiet and gentle. I'd go again.

I had a holiday in Nidri, Lefkada many years ago so it will have changed. I loved it but it was very quiet, might not suit teenagers. Little seafront with a few tavernas. I did a windsurfing course over a few days.

We did a week in Meganisi last summer, I absolutely loved it (although it was very hot). It was a very relaxing week, we spent a lot of time by the pool and on Fanari beach, eating lots of delicious Greek food and hired a boat for a day. I’d happily go back there again. I’ve not stayed in Lefkada so no personal experience but I know others who have been and really liked it.

We’ve been to Lefkada twice with Greek relatives, and loved it. We stayed in Syvota which is a small village with a harbour, which was great with younger kids. We hired a car and enjoyed going to other beaches (Porto Katsiki in particular - pebbly with sunbeds for hire and very salty, floaty water). Vasiliki was pretty busy at night and has sandy beaches. Lots of people seem to sail around too. I guess it depends what you’re after.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 29/04/2023 12:40

Thanks all, good to hear about Meganisi in particular - I’d not heard of it before 😳

I could easily have done two weeks in Meganisi. But I am lazy and just love beaches,a pool.and good food...

AvonCallingBarksdale · 29/04/2023 13:17

@Movinghouseatlast me too!! We had a mega active holiday last year so lazing suits me fine!

Week in each sounds great. Nydri on Lefkada is just 20 minute ferry to Meganisi. Nydri is pretty touristy nowadays, full of restaurants, little shops, boat hire etc. There are some fab organised day trip boat tours around the islands with bbqs snorkeling etc. Also watersports- paddleboards, inflatables pulled by speedboats etc. Meganisi is then quiet and relaxed perfection!

Allforit · 29/04/2023 13:33

Made it sound a bit busy - dont worry, even Nydri is not a full on place, plenty of chance for relaxation and quiet dips in the sea

friendlycat · 29/04/2023 14:07

A week in each would be great. Personally I would find 2 weeks in Meganisi I bit restricted as it’s so small.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 01/04/2024 12:59

In the end we spent 10 days on Meganisi and it was just what we all needed! Gorgeous villa, great eateries and trips to Vathi and Fanari Beach for a bit of excitement 😁. Crystal clear waters, loads of Greek salad and chilled family time.

I’m thinking of Paxos this summer - anyone been there?

Lefkada was stunning. Stayed in nikiana. Hired a car and saw the whole island. I would definitely go back.

I think it was your ex that put you off. Cycling those mountains does not look fun

I’m heading to Meganisi soon and I was in Paxos last summer! Paxos was really beautiful, we stayed near lakka. Lots of great restaurants and our favourite beach was orkos and chilling at bens bar. The food in the mountains village was the best. Definitely get the boat across to anti-paxos as the beach there is stunning. Gaios was the our least favourite town but it was still stunning. Do you have any tips for Meganisi?

AvonCallingBarksdale · 13/05/2024 21:00

@Keeponkeepigon our Villa was in Spartochori which is a bit “busier” than Katomeri, but quieter than Vathy. We had some great snorkelling off Limonari beach. Summer Sun was great for evening cocktails and views. When we needed a bit of “excitement” we went to Fanari Beach and hired a day bed, which the DC loved. It’s very chilled there, reggae bar great for drinks and lunch. We had a couple of amazing breakfasts at Pristina Project in Vathy. The island is so small you can get around v easily - we had a hire car. Parts are extremely rural - DH ran the length of the island and a goat fell out of a tree in front of him 😅.
Enjoy!

We visited both on a Sunsail week. Loved all the ports. And then had a relaxing week in Vasiliki (Lefkada). Would do it again!

Keeponkeepigon · 13/05/2024 22:02

Thanks for replying. I’m now really hoping I see a goat fall out of a tree 🤣! Off to buy a snorkel for the kids in the morning, can’t wait X
