Best base for a week in Norway

Want to visit, probably in summer, and have one base rather than travel round. Somewhere we can do fjords trips, hiking, and also just chill and enjoy the scenery.

thinking Bergen or Tromso? Any thoughts or suggestions? Accommodation recommendations welcome…

I have been to both of your suggested places and love them equally!
Norway is a truly beautiful country.
You will have sea, mountains and fjords aplenty whichever you choose.

In Bergen I stayed at a friend's flat but in Tromso we based ourselves at the Radisson Blu beside the port which was great for watching the Hurtigruten ferries coming and going. It's not a big place, everything is reachable on foot.

I haven't been to Tromso, but Bergen would tick the box. You could do the Norway in a nutshell tour and fly back from Oslo? We loved everything about Norway- amazing place.

Silkierabbit · 28/04/2023 00:40

We did Alesund which worked well, for fjords etc.

TakeMe2Insanity · 28/04/2023 06:59

I think Bergen is better connected.

what a coincidence. Just spent a working week in Bergen and landed in Trondheim (on plane still!) to take flight back to Uk on a convoluted route.

Bergen is gorgeous, super pricey, home to fanststic hikes if you go in the summer. Floyen, ulrichen - all hikes me. Fjord trips on boats from Bryggen. Superbly expensive. Bear that in mind!

All hikeable*

Fivemoreminutes1 · 28/04/2023 07:05

I think Bergen has a better choice of easily accessible day trips.

JimLaheysWhiskeyBottle · 28/04/2023 07:07

I live here in Norway, in Trondheim area, my view from home is of the fjord 😀

What sort of things would you like? You could base yourself in a cabin for a really cosy experience.

The weather here is a little different! You might get warm sunny days, you might get rain and need the fire on!

The further south you are the warmer it tends to be, but further north I think is more stunning.

Feel free to send me a pm if I can help 😌

Thanks all. It sounds like Bergen will be a good option. Ideally we would go self-catering to better manage DS1’s food allergies but wary of using Airbnb as have had issues before with last-minute cancellations. So if anyone knows of a reputable holiday rentals company do shout!

Ideally we’ll be in town so we don’t have to hire a car, but with a garden or decent size balcony.

Cabins

This is a link to some cabin rentals in Bergan.
If these don't suit, just Google hytte til leie bergan and you will find lots. 😊
