Ideas for active family summer holiday

We've done western France every summer for years and need a change. Things we like:

Walking proper marked trails e.g. like in national parks
Activities like swimming, kayaking, surfing, horseriding etc
History and culture

Locations: would consider other parts of France, Germany, Netherlands, Scandanavia, Central/Eastern Europe. Not southern Europe - too hot! Would also consider USA or Canada.

Accommodation - preferably self catering but with options to eat out some days.

Would be 2 weeks in school summer holidays.

Any suggestions of areas or specific places/itineraries would be very welcome!

Try morzine in the alps. Lots to, not too expensive and get the summer pass if the accommodation are in the scheme, for £15 each per week. Swimming pool, lake, cable cars all included.

Vancouver Island.

Azores has all that available, swimming in sea including with dolphins, hot springs you can go in, lakes for kayaking, surfing and horse riding are available. Good for history and culture. Would need car hire.

Also did Finland and saw brown bears in wild at Arola Bears and went canoeing there then white water rafting and mountain bobsleigh etc. Norway is very good but seriously expensive. Austria is good as well. Longhaul Costa Rica is amazing with ziplines, kayaking, swimming in ocean, horseriding through jungle, hot springs, wildlife .

Another vote for Morzine. Excellent accommodation standards as they are used as premium ski chalets in the winter, all the lifts are open so you can get up the mountains easily and hiking is well established. Mountain biking is big, but I think you need to be slightly unhinged as it looks utterly terrifying. Kayaks on lake Montriond. Les Gets has had an inflatable assault course on their lake in previous years, French equivalent of Go Ape in Morzine centre as well as a public pool with slide and indoor pool. Avoriaz has an indoor pool with lazy river. Horse riding. The summer pass gives you access to lifts, small train, pool and discounts on various other activities.
For active families it's amazing, approx 8 hours from Calais. Check out: Simply Morzine, Treeline chalets and Reach4thealps for chalets.

@Annexlife sold Morzine better than me! Also white water rafting and plenty of walks. Going back again this summer.

One of the ski resorts in the US Rockies fly into Denver, stay in Breck or Vail.

Was also coming on here to say Morzine!

Wow, thanks all. Love the sound of Morzine. Off to check it out. Friend IRL has also recommended lakes east of Salzburg. Also think Azores sounds fan but maybe save that for the following Easter as will be hot in Aug I think?
