Munich Salzburg Vienna - areas to stay and hotel recommendations

We have finally booked our flights are we are going to Munich, Salzburg and Vienna in August.

Does anyone have any hotel recommendations? Or areas that are particularly nice, or even areas to avoid!

We need to book 2 rooms each, so nothing massively expensive but hopefully we can find somewhere nice.

We like to walk everywhere, won't have a car and would like to be nice and central, but in a safe area with cafes and restaurants.

Thank you!

Stayed in 25hours hotel in Munich which was great and very handy.

if it’s out of budget, Arrabella park is the business district but nice, and easy to commute into the town

We stayed at B&B Hotel City West (not an actual B & B) a few years ago with a family of 4. Quite reasonable price and very clean and quiet. It was a 5 minute walk to the train and about 3 stops to the city centre. Much more of a residential neighbourhood vibe than tourist area.

Going to shamelessly jump in as I'm planning a similar August itinerary though as yet have only booked flights into Innsbruck and out of Munich. I've started looking at hotels and was wondering about the Premier Inn in Munich. I always go for a PI or Hilton Hampton in the UK.

I have noticed that Salzburg is virtually full, as I'd imagined, and might actually just pull in a long day there from somewhere else!

Hi @So1invictus it sounds like you have a nice trip planned too!

I've still to look at the suggestions from the kind people who have posted on this thread, however one other option that popped up in Salzburg is Motel One Mirabell which looks like a reasonable option. Might be worth a look!

We'll have to have a secret Mumsnet sign as we wander round these wonderful places!

@So1invictus yes! A little secret badge maybe - haha!

We stayed at Haus im Tal in Munich at Easter. It is very centrally located - about 2 min from the central square. You can get a train directly there from the airport. Public transport is great generally in Germany though. It was very comfortable, if rather spartan modernist. Lovely rooftop reception/bar. Right next to the food market too, so loads of great food options.

I would just say that all 3 of these places can be very, VERY hot in August.

So air conditioning is a must.

We stayed in a lovely hotel in Vienna but without aircon it was brutal.

In Vienna, Hotel am Stephansplatz, which is slap bang opposite the cathedral. You can walk everywhere centrally from there, and also easily get the train out to Schonbrunn.

We stayed at the Goldener Hirsch in Salzburg and the Hotel Grand Wien in Vienna. The breakfast at the Grand Wien was fabulous. We caught the train to get to Vienna from salzburg and it was super easy.

We looked at the Adina aparthotel in Vienna, close to the station and offers 1 and 2 bed apartments. I haven't stayed yet so can't say what it's like, but it looks lovely and thought it might help with multiple room needs

AnnaMagnani · 06/05/2023 11:56

Can't remember where we stayed in Salzburg but breakfast was nice but expensive. And everyday we walked past people having breakfast on the terrace at Cafe Sacher and wished we were doing that instead.
