British Airways premium economy

Has anyone flown Premium economy with British Airways? Is it worth the extra cost?

Another questions - has anyone ever been upgraded for free or even to business/1st class? It's never happened to us and we're flying long haul in June!

depends on how much extra its costing

and unless you have status with the airline its unlikely you will get a free upgrade

We did it to Australia. I definitely thought it was worth it, but that was back in 2011 and the prices of flights were more reasonable then. We got that bit extra legroom and a leg rest which meant we go a good sleep to Singapore for our stop over. I don't recall if we got any other extras with it food wise or anything though. Been upgraded once to business but only because I was flying with my FIL and he's a v frequent flier with BA. agree with the other comment about needing status with an airline for that

Hi we’ve done PE a few times it’s worth it we bought 2x2 economy tickets last month and one pair was upgraded to PE we let our teenagers have it and we stayed in economy just saved any arguments that way

Myjobisanightmare · 21/04/2023 16:52

Sorry yes we’ve used BA quite a few times hence the upgrade

Bells3032 · 21/04/2023 16:53

Have done it. On longer haul I think it's deff worth the money for premium economy -bigger seats easier to sleep. Also done business mostly using points.

You deff wouldn't get upgraded to 1st from premium. I have been upgraded to premium a few times over the years but was a single person and flights in the holidays so wanted to have the grouped seats for families.i don't think it's as common as it used to be. Are you flying alone or with others

Whats the difference in price?

No I don't think it's worth it at all you should ring BA and sometimes they can do you a good deal on Business Class, re upgrades few and far between and you will always only be upgrade one class ie economy to PE, PE to Business, Business to First you will never be moved from economy to business for example

Flew PE last month and it was definitely worth it. Never ever had an upgrade despite having a family BA account and DP gold card 😢

victoriaaurora · 21/04/2023 18:52

Flew Premium this time with BA and it was worth it. We sat right at the back and reclined the seats without having to inconvenience anyone. It was very comfortable and there was much more space than economy. For an overnight flight, you obviously can't lie flat so unless you can sleep upright-ish, it may not be worth forking out the extra.

If you are prepared to pay a bit more, you can ask the cost of an upgrade on the day and it's normally cheaper if they have availability. Upgrades are rare unless you have bought a very expensive ticket and they have overbooked your cabin. In all the times I've flown, I have only been upgraded twice - once on honeymoon (because we flew business out) and then for business when I was on a last minute expensive ticket and got upgraded to first. All other times I've paid for business. You're not missing that much though, BA business has gone right down the pan IMO

I like PE if you get the leg support, without that, it’s not as good. I’ve had both leg support and just a footrest on BA so it’s a bit of a lottery.

MyWayOnly · 22/04/2023 16:21

i usually book economy going out and business coming home (night flight) using Avios. I’ve had several free upgrades to PE on the way out, we only find out a few days before when looking at the seat allocation. Family of 3.
Can only assume it’s the fact we’re business coming home that flags us up if economy is overbooked. We don’t have status either, lowly blue class. But Club coming home is fab!

MrsPatrickDempsey · 22/04/2023 16:26

We flew PE with BA and AA last autumn both long haul and think it's definitely worth it.

Orangello · 22/04/2023 16:48

Depends on the price. It's nothing like business, just slightly more comfortable. So if a little bit more expensive - worth it. If twice the price then no.

Parker231 · 22/04/2023 16:51

I’ve BA gold status and enough air miles for the whole family to use. I’ve had upgrades from business to first a couple of times on long haul which is lovely! I travel business class for work (and I get the air miles) and on holiday we use the miles to go business as a family.

GCAcademic · 22/04/2023 16:54

I've had an upgrade twice from PE to Business. On both occasions it was at the gate and on a flight back from India. Not quite sure what to make of that.

MathiasBroucek · 22/04/2023 16:56

PE is good. I’ve been upgraded from PE to Bus Class but that’s not really something you could rely on

Kevinbaconsrealwife · 22/04/2023 16:57

We flew BA PE to Dubai and back last November….economy for both of us would have been about a grand , PE was 2K and for us worth every single penny….lovely comfy reclining seats….the window seat had extra storage at the side….lovely food and what seemed like unlimited wine…highly recommended xx

BruceAndNosh · 22/04/2023 17:00

We flew PE to Florida in the winter. We were taking golf clubs so needed extra luggage anyway which we could off set against the dearer ticket.
It's much closer to Economy than Business class but I felt it worth it. Seat configuration means you only ever have to get past it one person never two, and you may be able to squeeze past if they are asleep.
Marginally better meal and quicker service.
Avoid back row. My seat extended beyond the arch into economy and I was frequently bumped by flight attendants passing through the curtain

GiltEdges · 22/04/2023 18:01

Never actually flown PE, but was upgraded from PE to Business on a flight a few years ago. I was travelling solo and there was some issue around wanting to keep a family together. Business is great, but I wouldn't pay full price for it.
