I know you can bring an under seat bag, but can you also bring a small handbag as well? given that one goes under the seat and the small handbag can go in the overhead?

No only one bag total unless you upgrade, or one fits inside the other.

No, you get one unless you upgrade.
The overhead lockers get full sometimes so you don't have the option for both overhead locker and under the seat in case under the seat is your only option.

They haven’t been checking at all on any flight I’ve taken with them in the last few years . I flew with them yesterday and had my ‘under seat’ bag up in the locker as there was loads of space even when fully boarded .
I also had a small hand bag with me but could have stuffed it into the other bag if necessary .

They don’t seem to check your underseat bag as long as it’s a soft bag. They do check the size of wheeled cases and several people have been charged for them on every flight I’ve been on recently.

Officially, you’re only allowed one bag total but they have never insisted on me putting my handbag in to the other bag recently. I use a small crossbody. They might not be as forgiving about something bigger.

I had a tiny handbag on my recent flight, as well as the under seat bag, but the handbag would easily have fitted in my main hand luggage bag if necessary.

The overhead storage is reserved for those who have paid extra for an additional cabin bag, so sometimes there's lots of space and sometimes none, depending on how many people paid the extra.

I flew EasyJet last weekend - on the flight out (from Gatwick), I was told I could have my small handbag as well as my cabin bag. On the way back(from Inverness), the check-in woman said I should put it inside my cabin bag ‘while I was boarding’ in case the cabin staff objected to it.
Both times I was asked to put my soft-sided cabin bag in the measuring gauge, so it’s not just wheeled cases they check.
On the flight out, the cabin crew asked people several times not to put anything except the large-sized cabin bags (which you pay extra for) in the overhead lockers - no coats, handbags, laptops or carrier bags as the flight was full and they had a full quota of large cabin bags booked.

I've flown with them several times recently to and from Bristol, the last trip was Thursday. I had an underseat sized cabin bag plus a tiny handbag for passports and phone which I knew would fit in the cabin bag if I was asked. The steward actually suggested I put my cabin bag in the overhead locker for take off, put it up for me and said I could leave it up there if I wanted as there was plenty of roomSmile.
I have never had my cabin bags checked for size but always expect it to happen.
