Week in Rome - is Pompeii doable? Eurocamp

Hi all,

Have done a search on Pompeii and saw lots of helpful posters, so was hoping to get some thoughts / advice.

We are travelling to Rome in October, staying at the Eurocamp there. Two kids ages 4 and 7.

We would love to visit Pompeii but I am aware it is a long journey for kids, around 3 hours by coach, I think?

I had thought about doing the trip myself one day, and leaving DH and kids at the campsite.

But I'm now wondering if we could all get the train from Rome to Sorrento, book a hotel in Sorrento for one night, visit Pompeii the next day, and then get the train back to Eurocamp in Rome that evening?

I'm wary of trying to pack too much into a week. Trying to balance having a fun/relaxing holiday with seeing everything we want to see (I realise a week isn't nearly long enough to see everything).

We are arriving in Rome late Thursday morning, and flying out again the following Thursday early afternoon, so will have exactly one week.

The kids love Eurocamp so we will be wanting to spend a decent amount of time in the camp at the pool etc. Plus one day visiting Rome.

So I'm wondering if the Sorrento / Pompeii idea would just be too much?

Any thoughts much appreciated!

Hi

Not sure if you are planning on making your own way to Pompeii or booking a tour but just back from Rome and did both Ostia Antica and a Pompeii tour from Rome both with City Wonders tours - hands down the Ostia tour was the clear winner with all of us.

The organised bus trip to Pompeii has either Vesuvius/Naples or another stop included and the Pompeii visit itself is under 2 hours, an hour for lunch and an hour 15 minutes for Vesuvius. We left Rome for 7:30 and got back at 9:30 so a huge amount of driving time with no charge points or toilet on the bus. The drive is 3 hours each way with no traffic at all and everyone on the bus being where they are supposed to be at the right time - needless to say they were not. I would book a tour of Ostia so you have what you are looking at - the investment in that will still be much cheaper than doing the trip to Pompeii.

I would second what everyone else is saying and save Pompeii for another time especially with small children.

Camping Fabulous is amazing but I think it's a bus and train to central Rome isn't it? So although the trains to Naples aren't bad you'd end up with a lot of travel in one day.

I agree with previous posters - you'll be so close to Ostia Antica and it's great!

Rome itself is plenty for a week. That being said, Dd wanted to go to Herculaneum and we said it was too much. So years later she's upset that we plan to go there this year. I wish we had done another trip.

Another vote here for Ostia Antica. I loved it.

I had always wanted to go to Pompeii and when I did (a couple of years after going to Ostia Antica) I was unexpectedly disappointed. It was jam packed and I felt horrified seeing the casts of the dead people, even though I had been really interested in them.
