European Christmas market recommendations

Went to Berlin last year and that was great, mainly chose there as I’m vegan and food options were abundant though heard Germany’s great on the whole for this

Where would you recommend? Thinking 2 or 3 nights in early December and somewhere ultra festive, but not too extortionate

Vienna or Prague

I second Vienna. There are at least three big Christmas markets, and they are all really good.

I wasn't impressed with the vegan food elsewhere in Germany (strictly speaking vegetarian food, dd eats dairy and eggs) most restaurants only had veggie burger or baked potatoes with cheese as options - Berlin is likely to be exceptional as the capital. We also struggled in Austria for vegetarian food. Never been to Prague. I've been underwhelmed by Christmas markets more generally so I'm not best to have an opinion on them specifically.

Germany is definitely the epicentre for Christmas markets. Munich and Heidleburg were our favourites although our best one was Vienna. Just so evocative with all the Carol concerts. I'm veggie and had loads of choice but there was a lot of dairy.

We've also enjoyed Budapest and Bruges.

I had a wonderful time in Munich a few years ago. There are lots of markets dotted all over the city, some with themes like ‘medieval.’

The food & mulled wine was delish! And then you gave all the attraction of the city too. Great fun!

We have just got back from Munich and managed to find some fine Vegan/Veggie options, including a couple of very good specifically Vegan restaurants. I was quite impressed, as assumed it would be mostly Bavarian type fare.
So can't recommend the xmas market specifically (though I have heard good things), but the Vegan aspect is fine - there are lists online of where to find the best eateries.

Another vote for Vienna, markets are fabulous (although can’t vouch for vegetarian food).

(I know it’s April, but I’ve been pondering this year’s Christmas market trip this week too …😆)

Cologne and Bruges. Bruges tended to be more costly though

MrsSkylerWhite · 18/04/2023 22:50

Rottenburg ob dear Tauber. Magical.

Bookwanderer · 18/04/2023 23:08

Tallin is top of my list..

Jabiru · 18/04/2023 23:10

Colmar. Trust me, it’s amazing.

reluctantbrit · 19/04/2023 07:51

Rothenburg ob der Tauber and Colmar are not really easy to access from airports without lengthly transport.

Both are beautiful but if you only have Friday - Sunday it's quite a loss timewise.

Bookwanderer · 19/04/2023 09:32

Where would be the best for Fri to Sun? Which markets have short easy taxi rides from airports?
