Canaries - which is the nicest island?

If you've been to more than one Canary island, which one did you prefer?

We've been to Gran Canaria before, wouldn't be against going back but one of the other islands could be a possibility. Just wondering which one others prefer and why?

Lanzarote

Relatively undeveloped outside of the main resort Puerto del Carmen. Strangely beautiful.

Just back from Lanzarote and it was gorgeous but as above avoid puerto del carmen - it’s a dump. There’s so much to see Timanfaya is fabulous and the green caves and mirador del Rio.
It’s very windy though

PrinceHaz · 12/04/2023 19:45

I liked the inland villages in Fuerteventura
I like Lanzarote generally: we stayed at Playa Blanca, a well known bu tnot massive family resort
In Tenerife, I liked Garachico on the north coast, some smart hotels and wild coastal scenery but not very resorty.
The small island of La Palma is meant to be lusher and greener than the others.

CottonSock · 12/04/2023 19:45

I like lanzarote and rural parts of tenerife

Hotpinkangel19 · 12/04/2023 19:56

Lanzarote. Wasn't keen on Tenerife.

userxx · 12/04/2023 20:03

I stayed in playa Blanca in Lanzarote and would definitely go back again.

itsgettingweird · 12/04/2023 20:09

If you want true tranquility and lushness then La Gomera is the best island.

If you want touristy then all the others have pros and cons.

Tenerife - nice excursions, great water park, north lusher and greener. But very dry and becoming developed so lots of building in the south.

Lanzarote - very much as Tenerife but a little windier and less touristy on the whole.

Fuenteventura - very windy! But nice to explore and has more quieter places to visit.

Gran Canaria - much like Tenerife tbh.

I’ve been to Gran Canaria, Tenerife and Lanzarote. I’ve been to Lanzarote twice.
The first time we went to Lanzarote we stayed in Costa Teguise, the main square was lovely and we had some gorgeous meals out but it’s was far too windy there for us and this was end of July/start of August. We hired a car and drove to Playa Blanca, Puerto del Carmen and went to visit the caves. We then returned to Playa Blanca the following year. The beach is really nice and it has a lovely marina area as well. It’s much less windy in Playa Blanca which is in the south of the island.
Tenerife was just an out of season holiday to drop and flop and we wanted some sun end of October.
Gran Canaria was a quick bank holiday weekend getaway so didn’t get to see much of the island.
What time of year are you planning on visiting and what type of things are you hoping to do whilst on holiday?

Nattertatter03 · 12/04/2023 20:25

We love Playa blanca , lanzo, it’s lovely xx

Sausagerolex · 12/04/2023 20:27

Not keen on any of them tbh- there are places I would much prefer to go than go back to any of the canaries

Windy is a real issue. It makes it hard to sit and relax by the pool or eat out etc.

Mostly touristy and just dull aside the odd trip out to the vineyards or mountains

Waterpark is Tenerife if fantastic but that’s about the only good thing I can say.

They're all a bit boring but nice for autumn/Spring sun and don't get too blazing hot in summer months.
Agree with others re Playa Blanca in Lanzarote. Not sure of spelling but Mogan in Gran Canaria is nice. Steer clear of Las Americas in Tenerife!!

KohlaParasaurus · 12/04/2023 20:45

I've been to Tenerife and Gran Canaria lots of times for activity holidays in the British winter. Gran Canaria is my favourite by a hairsbreadth. It's just a little bit gentler and greener. I've also been to Lanzarote and quite liked it but found the relentless black lava, squat white buildings and the endless wind soon became tiresome.

ColinTheCorgi · 12/04/2023 21:00

I've been to the 4 biggest islands and I love lanzarote.

RideACockHorseToSunburyCross · 12/04/2023 21:06

Fuerteventura is my favourite

91BlackCat · 12/04/2023 21:21

Can I ask if there are still problems with cockroaches in the Canaries? We went to Gran Canaria in the early 1990's and the complex we stayed in had a major infestation.

gogohmm · 12/04/2023 21:27

They are not the most exciting locations but make lovely destinations for a reasonably priced sun trip outside of European summer. I don't mind about the wind because we like to go sailing!

PeonyFairy · 12/04/2023 21:34

I've been to them all. Liked gran canaria the least.
Lanzarote the best with fuertaventura a close second.
Tenerife very commercialised but has a great water park.
I wouldn't go for a summer holiday though, I like to go in winter for a bit of sun. In summer they don't offer anything you can't get in the med on a shorter flight.
It's true they are windy but if it's hot that suits me.
In Lanzarote I like puerto del Carmen but prefer playa blanca. Depends what you want from a holiday.

LubaLuca · 12/04/2023 21:38

I love Lanzarote. Great beaches and really interesting landscapes inland. I don't often visit places more than once but I've been to Lanzarote twice and would definitely consider going again.

BirminghamNewStreet · 12/04/2023 21:44

I’ve been to all of them and prefer Lanzarote, imo Playa Blanca is the nicest resort.

Thelondonone · 12/04/2023 22:02

Lanzarote by a country mile. Beautiful in a barren way as not over developed. Loads to do if you hire a car. Would recommend the houses. I like the los mojones area of playa del carmen as I like a villa so the wind isn’t an issue.

SittingOnTheChair · 12/04/2023 22:17

Ditch them all and got to Maderia instead.

Oh yes... this. Love Madeira!

If it has to be Canaries, then its La Gomera for me. Its almost magical with its other worldliness.

SquareRootOfAllEvil · 12/04/2023 22:22

I really liked La Palma - much greener and more interesting than the main islands, and more to do / see than La Gomera.

Yoyo2021 · 12/04/2023 22:46

I love Gran Canaria!!!!

Lanzerote and Fuerteventura - too windy!

Tenerfie - lots to do but too busy!
