Last day in France tomorrow - what to buy at supermarket to bring home?!

Exactly that - I remember as a kid always wanting my parents to bring back the sirop stuff they have here in place of squash!

Obviously meat and cheeses are tricky but what stuff is better in France that I should get from the supermarket to bring home?!

Lemonsaretheonlyfruit, you mean Tahiti Douche!

@MissEarlGrey

Ahhh yes thankyou!First brought back from a French exchange trip 39 years ago and love seeing that they are still going!

Mixa hand cream (the orange one for mains abimés) if you happen to have dry skin. It's miraculous stuff. Their body lotions are really good too.

Yes yes YES to mustard crisps. I also like Fritelles in the ready salted and emmental flavours (like chipsticks).

Tins of cassoulet and confit de canard.

Long life mayo in tubes, the mustardy kind.

Cassegrain tinned veg.

Fish soup in jars.

Little mini tubes of condensed milk.

Vache qui rit apericubes.

Le petite maresellies (sp??!) Almond body wash
the big bags of madelines

fancy lindt, carambars and haribo

potatowhale · 12/04/2023 16:06

Those sweets you only get on holiday.
Brie.

SaffyWall · 12/04/2023 16:10

Benco
Peach confiture
Dijon mayonaisse
Milka
Boxes of wine - such good value and far easier to transport.

Beebumble2 · 12/04/2023 20:25

The tin bottles of Sirope, Citron is lovely.
Coffee if it’s cheaper than here.
Milka chocolate

MissingMoominMamma · 12/04/2023 20:49

I always bring a couple of bottles of pizza oil- the ones with the dried herbs in.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 12/04/2023 21:02

Hollywood 'chlorophylle' chewing gum.

TwoPointFourCatsAndDogs · 12/04/2023 21:11

Party plates and cups, they always seem to have matching rolls of cute table cloth and napkins. Perfect for DD’s birthday.

Stationary, especially the squared note books.

Caramel shower gel. Delicious.

OhCobblers · 12/04/2023 21:20

Fleur de Sel

LawksaMercyMissus · 12/04/2023 21:42

Jars of anchovies packed in salt, about 1.50€ instead of £6.
Asparagus and any other vegetables currently in season

BreatheAndFocus · 12/04/2023 21:46

Hollywood chewing gum - great flavours
Tins of mackerel in white wine (drooling writing that)
Some of the posher mustards
Madelines
Grenadine syrop
Lindt chocolate
Lots of lovely wines 🍷

Theimpossiblegirl · 12/04/2023 21:51

I'd bring back meat and cheeses. I know the rules may have changed but they won't have suddenly become unsafe post Brexit. Just hide them.

Disclaimer- if you get done for smuggling don't blame me.

Willowtre1 · 12/04/2023 22:00

Apple flavour mentoes
Haribo tagada sweets
Elephant chocolate
Carambar
Tinned duck confit
Red wine
Syrop can drinks

DorisParchment · 12/04/2023 22:08

Banania
Le Petit Marseillais soaps and shower gel
Cheese and charcuterie (I don’t think there are any restrictions on bringing stuff into the U.K. just in the other direction)
Grenadine sirop
As much wine as you can carry.

I miss living in France.

twinteenwrangler · 12/04/2023 22:23

Just did this last week. Such a lot of things you can get at home now but still buy these:
Wine and cider
Almond scented washing up liquid
Petit Marseilles hand soap and refills
Pickled cornichons
White balsamic (way cheaper)
Dijon mustard
Mayonnaise (also garlic Mayo and cocktail sauce)
Powdered sugar for pancakes
Orangina haribos
Chocolate
Berlin cheesy cocktail biscuits
Baguette and pate for a getting home snack
Also necessary to mooch around the home and stationery departments - paper straws are much better quality and cheaper randomly

MissMarplesbag · 12/04/2023 22:49

Keep these tips coming because dc are going to France in June so will send them with a list and cash!

Beebumble2 · 13/04/2023 07:10

When we had original parquet floors, France was the only place we could get polish for them.

I think we're still allowed to bring in whatever we want for personal use. There are limitations but it's some number of kilos so you'd have to try hard to buy enough to exceed it in cheese and cured meats.

We just aren't allowed to take anything back out to the EU.

Phineyj · 13/04/2023 07:26

Dijonnaise. If you eat meat, merguez sausages to go with it.

My favourite cheese that you can't get here is Vieux Mimolette.

Orangina with actual sugar in. Bonus if it's the 6 packs of the dinky little glass bottles.

Hit up the stationery section. I adore those folders in numbered sections with the elastics. They were the first thing I bought post pandemic!

I know we have them in the UK but Decathlon is even better there. The trainers are excellent value.

Clevs · 13/04/2023 13:22

Definitely Orangina, you can't seem to find it over here in big bottles.

Hopefully you can only carry 24 bottles (18 litres) each. Any over, and you'll get charged on the lot. Sparkling is an additional allowance. My FIL got caught out... :-(

Absolute horror - our roof box has broken. We've had to find space in our car, around 2 adults and 2 children for all the roof box bits (2 suitcases and all the bedding!) so I was forced into a limited shop!!

I did however manage to get Dijon mayo, gallette biscuits, camemberts, soaps and sirop!

So bloody chuffed thanks for all the reminders and suggestions! X
